pheloxi | is it time to wear a hat? |

you can also see it this way

they are blocking foreign langages now to get ride of the backlog of modrated postings and then slowly add new languages, because as long as they have backlog of foreign posting they can not effectively add language, because of their bussy with checking them.

On the better days, I hope you're right...

Now, if a website in France decided that as of now all postings made there had to be in French - how many Brits would call that typical French arrogance.....?

I always liked the website of a certain German right-wing political party. It had a 'go to English version' button. The English version simply said "Learn German!".

[disclaimer: not exact quotes. And it might not have been a button. And it might have been an Austrian party, or some other EU country. And it could have been a hoax. All power to the people, and ban the f*****g bomb]

Gnomon: Irish is spoken in small parts of Northern Island, Northern Island is part of the United Kingdom and Citizens of the United Kingdom are issued with British passports, those North of the border may be Irish as I am English but just as I am British so are they.

Jack Naples: Manx extinct eh? so is that why there Manx speaking nursery schools ?

Parrferris: I too wonder what the editors would say to BBC Cymru if they asked for a DNA sitesmiley - huh

Gnomon - time to move on

Citizens of Northen Ireland are not issued with British Passports. They are issued with United Kingdom passports.

You are English because you come from England. You are British because you come from Great Britain. Northern Ireland residents do not come from Great Britain. Therefore they are not British.

One possible meaning of "British" is "Of or relating to the United Kingdom or the Commonwealth of Nations".

Haven't seen that one before. It would not be considered acceptable by anybody living in the Republic of Ireland. But then, maybe it's none of our business.

its part of the British Isles smiley - tongueout

but point noted, now for the purposes of simplicity for the rest of this conversation I will continue to use the term "Non English British Languages" and hope you get over your hang-up.

That said, the BBC Producer's Guidelines do suggest that:

>>> while some people in Northern Ireland regard themselves as "British" others regard themselves as "Irish". When referring to the population as a whole we should use the term "the people of Northern Ireland" (but not "the Northern Irish")

The term "British Isles" should not be used as it is deeply offensive to more than four million residents of one of the islands referred to.
