21 June 2002: Non-English Language Postings

Post 1

The H2G2 Editors

We have taken the decision to remove all non-English language Postings from the site from now on. This follows an escalation in the number of Postings of this type and is also in line with BBC Editorial Policy.

It is still our intention to eventually restore all non-English language legacy Postings - however, new ones will be failed.

This is a shame, but I suppose an enivitable consequence of moderation.

Still, keep up the good work smiley - smiley

You can call me TC

Where have people been posting these?

I have only used French (since Rupert) because we were told French and Bubblish were perfectly OK. And for German we are waiting to be told that we can use it again.

And why this particular moment?

Whisky

smiley - blush There were a few of us carrying out a Franglais conversation this morning - all totally harmless and understandable to anyone with even a smattering of French, but obviously the moderator on duty this morning didn't even have that and sent all the postings to be verified... which probably didn't go down too well in the office.

smiley - grovel

That's what you get for living in a monoglot nation. Oh well, that's life, as they don't say in France.

Freddy, Keeper Of The Word "fnar!". Back from the Underworld.

babelfish.altavista.com would pretty much have solved any mystery surrounding the meaning of those postings, too.

Or www.tranexp.com:2000/InterTran?

Or www.freetranslation.com/

And it's not like the beeb aren't aware of such utilities:

Martin Harper

This would be a good place to point out that the Freedom Petition at A544943 is still running, and still requests "The freedom to communicate in any language we choose, whether common or rare, widespread or concentrated, alive or dead, without any discrimination against us based upon our choice.".

Is that worth the price of a stamp?
