Lucinda, I don't think any of us can really complain that much, after all, if you read the first posting in the thread you'll be able to see we were almost expecting the posts to be moderated... Pity they can't be brought back though, it could have been quite funny.

Gnomon - time to move on

But there's a difference between being moderated and being banned. Up to now, we could post in any language, but we had to wait until a moderator got around to translating it into English to check it was OK. Now we are banned from using any 'foreign' language ever.

Mind you, it might be worth pointing out on the BBC Webwise page mentionned in Post 13 (http://www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/questions/query154.shtml)

There is a link:

[Broken link removed by Moderator]

which seems a little dodgy

Lets see if it works from here

Does the ban apply to foreign languages in Entries or is it only in conversations?

Any language except bad language, that is. We were entitled to post in Estonian if we wanted to. It just meant that our posting would be hidden until a moderator who spoke Estonian came along.

Regardless of whether you can complain about this decision, it's certainly worth complaining about the overall policy that led to this decision.

I'm almost tempted to break the "no spitting" rule. But I said my bit over a year ago and will not repeat it here, as we were told to be patient - things could only get better.

I think this stinks, as someone who wants to learn French, I was hoping to get some help here. I don't think it is fair to always legislate for the lasy British who can't be bothered to learn languages.

A compromise, for those us who would like to learn and to support those non-Brit who make all of that effect to type in our language.

Bi-lingual postings!

We shall promise to type in English with the foreign language of choice underneath, so that we can all begin to learn our european neighbours languages.

By the way, I have some Gaelic language tapes, as this language is also the language of this country, will you moderate that as well? As it is still spoken by some Scottish, Irish, Welsh and an awful lot of the Manx people (Isle of Man - they are taught it in school), I would love to know whether you would moderate that as well! As I would be interested in seeing what the gaelic speakers think of that!

You can call me TC

It is an affront to the generally high standard of education found among the researchers here. People weren't even using foreign languages to show off. Just to communicate.

But I said I'd shut up.

Freddy, Keeper Of The Word "fnar!". Back from the Underworld.

Whisky: I take it you mean the intertrans site?

firstly - that site is a bit on the slow side

secondly - it's on port 2000 (not 80, like the rest of the web), which means if you're behind a firewall on, say, a corporate network, you may not be able to see it.

Gnomon - time to move on

The announcement at the start of this conversation says all non-English language postings will be permanently hidden from now on. That includes Scots Gaelic, Irish Gaelic, Welsh and Cornish, all languages which are traditionally spoken within the United Kingdom, as well as Arabic and other languages that are spoken by many UK citizens in their own homes.

I deliberately excluded Manx, because it is not spoken within the UK. smiley - winkeye
