Er, Happydude, that displayed the conversation *list* in the original window, not the conversations selected from it... I was referring to the latter...
Way to clear a forum, huh!

"Jim, I suspect what Spike was trying to achieve was to get it to display the conversations in the browser window which originally launched the gadget"
No go, then, unless you can guarantee that your particular window has a specific name. I wanted to keep the javascript to a minimum (using only the functions we already use for other pop-ups on site).

Ok, despite having unsubscribed from this thread, i'd now like to make a complaint about this new gadget...
The fact that I've got a box open on my screen at work updating all my recent conversations has probably just doubled the number of postings I've made, and consequentially halved the amount of work I've done today... At this rate I'll end up getting the sack
Me, an addict, noooooo! I can quit whenever I want to

So what you're saying is, we look great to the BBC management because we're increasing posting traffic, and you'll soon have *loads* more time to spend reading and posting.
So where's the downside?

I came back to rescind my earlier praise for this gadget... and I find that Whisky has already made my complaint. I can't keep up with the pace of postings.

Why is it that my link on my page opens two separate windows - both loading the same page, except that one is what it's meant to be, and the other is in a normal IE window with the toolbars?
I put this:
Track us.
Help...

Jim,
Drat. I tried the frameset trick, but there were two problems:
First, the cookie doesn't entirely work in a frameset hosted at another ISP, so even after logging in *inside* the frame, I get the wrong display mode (unframed conversation views) even though I *almost* get the right skin (Goo, albeit with a "register" button where "My Space" should be...) but...
If I click on a conversation and reply to it, it lets me do so, and recognises who I am correctly! *Unfortunately* the "Reply to a conversation" page breaks out of the frames and puts things back into full-screen mode.
Back to the drawing board...

Jim Lynn Posted Feb 5, 2002
Ah yes, the Reply *would* break out - we do this for the framed forums so that the Reply page replaces the frameset instead of just the conversations window.
Unfortunately, there's no easy way around this, because taking out the target='_top' would break the behaviour of framed forums.
Hmm. I'll have to think about this.

Spike Anderson is sorry he can't catch up on a whole month's backlog Posted Feb 5, 2002
Can anybody tell me why we can't set the name of the original window?
-Spike A.

Jim Lynn Posted Feb 5, 2002
Because the parameters have to be known when you type the GuideML. If you know of some javascript to set the name of any currently open window, then you could use that to set the name of the original window to the target name you've coded into the gadget. But I've no idea if this is even possible.

No, no, you're supposed to say:
"Does anybody know why we can't set the name of the original window? I said, does anybody kno-"
And then fix it with a loud, strange noise.
It *is* possible, unless this doesn't work, but I wrote this somewhere up ^^ there.
window.name = "main"
...or something else. Then just target the popup accordingly.

Then see my page on fixing alabaster pages with a javascript button
A691058 - Make It Goo!
And you could use the same trick to name the window.
Or you could create an html page on your local hard drive, put in a link to wherever the POPUPCONVERSATIONS gadget is, with target="windowname" as a parameter of the tag, which would achieve the same thing. Make that your browser home page.
That would work.

How about having the file that sets the window name auto-forward to your original homepage, even?

I like the gatget very much.
Alas I alway have to reconfigure and replace the windows. Is it possible to use a cookie to remember the size and place of the conversation window and the pop-up window?
Another possibility would be to add something like
height="max" width="half_left"
Key: Complain about this post
