What hapenned to the debate on this topic? The thread has died out. In light of policies (or more appropriatelly the darkness) of the current US administration, this thread should be going off!

Lets see. We have Bush:
* Refusing to implement the Kyoto agreements,
* Open the Alaskan wilderness to oil exploration (as a response to the energy crisis that has been shown to be maufactured by the energy companies who are now drilling for oil in Alaska)
* Open old growth forests to logging as a response to wildfires,
* Imprisons foreign national without pressing any charges or allowing legal representation,
* Ruining international relations with the "Axis of Evil",
* Wants to start a war with one of the members of the said axis: Iraq, (more oil perhaps?),
* Refusing US personnel to be subject to the UN war crimes laws,

God, its' great to be American. If it weren't for us, who would you hate!LOL

All of the above policies are there for a reason. Most on this thread would not understand, and wouldn't admit it if they did.


It would be nice to be able to say its' Bushs' fault...except he has only been in "power" a couple of years....and there is that nasty 'ol Senate and House to contend with. He can't make a move on such things unless they say it is OK....and theres' about 500 of them!

Yea...we're just a bunch of lowlife scallawags with no consideration for the rest of the world, but last time I checked...we were doing the best we could with what we got.

Nope, but what I have heard is about the many sailors and one designer that have been brought by other sydycates. Looks like money will win again. Only it's european money being thrown around.

There doesn't seem to be any doubt to the fact that Bush is a fool, even in the US.

What puzzles me is how some people in countries like New Zealand and Australia are willing to support a war with Iraq. As pointed out by Della, NZ and the US haven't been on the best of terms since the NZ anti nuclear stance and Australia is constantly fighting with the US over subsidies in the farming sector. Despite these grievences, people are still willing to fight in support of the US.

Now I'm sure that both NZ and Oz are still grateful to the US for stopping a Japanese invasion during WWII, however the present generation will have more recent memories of Australia's support of the US in Vietnam.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is why is there all this support, by the people (not the government), of a war with a country that has minimal impact on the region ?

Neugen Amoeba - there is no support for war from New Zealand. It was offically ruled out in June after national elections.


As for subsidies, jobs have been lost recently here in NZ because Bush decided to protect the US steel industry some more. Globalisation? not s***ing likely. More like an inability to compete.

Apparition, I'm aware of the NZ government's position wrt military support in Iraq. I'm also aware of the Australian government's position (or at least the PM's and that joke Alexander Downer). In both cases we have the concept of military support being unpopular with the PEOPLE, which justifies NZ government's position but not Australia's.

However there is still some support within both countries by the people (official government support aside). And that's why I am puzzled. I'm not so much interested in why a government may or may not support this action. (They play their own political kissing games). But why would people feel so strongly?

From what I can gather, Australia has said it will not join a war with Iraq without good evidence of Iraqi WMD's or terrorist-links.
