The rules are pretty clear about language. Anything other than English is as good as [removed]. If censoring that post was absurd, then don't blame a moderator for following the rules. Blame those who wrote or demanded the rules. [In this case, obvious to deduce that they came from BBC, not h2g2 staff, since there was no silly rule about foreign languages before BBC.]

Satyagraha,
Welcome.
Should Quincy be banned based on the allegation that he is LeKZ, a grave misjustice will have occured. I share an apartment with LeKZ.
I have posted on the "Don't Ban Quincy" thread.
I can't claim to practice satyagraha, but I do speak truth only when it matters. It matters here and now.

They *are* allowed; posting in them does not violate the House Rules. The Mods only take bloody ages to translate it and put it back up.

Deidzoeb Posted Jan 15, 2002
French and German are allowed. They just get removed indefinitely until translated.
Here's a burger. You can eat it, but only after you put it in your freezer a few days and wait for us to call you to say it's okay.
If I knew what "vindaloo" was, I'd order that instead. (fan of Red Dwarf)

Hummmm, welll ... I guess the good bit is that you won't be kicked out for posting in German/French.

At this precise moment in time, I wished I would be. It's a con.
Comrade, Honourable Gentleman/Lady, and other terms of endearment...
Deidzoeb Posted Jan 15, 2002
What's a con? The idea that h2g2 is a place where "You can create your own Guide Entries containing anything you want, from your opinions of world events to a description of your home town, and it all goes to make up the h2g2 Guide, the sort of guide which was not possible before we had the means of live, shared information resources." ???
(Quote from DNA's welcome page circa 1999. see http://www.bbc.co.uk/h2g2/guide/welcome-dna
Keywords being "anything you want" (see House Rules, T&Cs) and "your opinions of world events" (see Guidelines during UK General Election, Guidelines during Afghan Crisis).

The SBVM was created in response to a forum posting where the Editors blamed a small but vocal minority for having to create the 'The Editors' account. It was a little while after LeKZ was banned, around the time that references to the FoLKZ list were deemed unacceptable.
btw - we can now actually call the FoLKZ list the FoLKZ list - good eh? Only because it no longer exists of course...

Not denying that the incident Lucinda cites was his/her inspiration for beginning the Small But Vocal Minority. But I'm almost positive the phrase was used by a member of h2g2 staff in describing conflicts with Zaphodistas before LeKZ was banned, probably before LeKZ had even joined h2g2.
Lucinda, clarify something for me... You mean that moderators or staff were removing not just links to FoLKZ, but also "references" to FoLKZ? You mean the word "FoLKZ?" Or directions on how to sign up for FoLKZ? I thought I had seen the word "FoLKZ" used around h2g2 before, but maybe I'm confusing this with what I've seen on n2g2, or some of the messages from FoLKZ that were sent to me.

Subcom,
We could use the word 'FoLKZ', and even make oblique (even direct, when not "quoting" banned researchers) references to whatall was happening there. But. Those of us who - when asked by others here at h2g2 - posted a link or gave directions on how to find the link on your own had our personal spaces obliterated until we removed the "offensive" link. Most of us capitulated. We are ofttimes a sorry lot.

Barton Posted Jan 16, 2002
Are you sure you want to be called 'tits'?
Wouldn't it be simpler and more direct to just use "INL" (I'm not LeKZ.)
INL folk,
We are gathered here to mourn the loss of two more people lost to the ranks of h2g2 researchers because they too aren't LeKZ despite the protestations of the disgruntled herd and their managing shepherds.
Don't mourn. Organize.

dayjob - I was thinking of getting a warning for providing the word 'FoLKZ' plus a link to the main topica website (.COMmunicate) - moderation on the subject was erratic though, and became less draconian over time...
I first saw the phrase back when Mark Moxon was busy flaming Matthew Kershaw - *way* back when I joined h2g2. The 'modicum of investigation' quote will take you there...

David Conway Posted Jan 16, 2002
Maybe we should just find a way to sew, say, a blue square onto the posts of every researcher who may be LeKZ.

Deidzoeb Posted Jan 16, 2002
Barton, please don't reroute the agenda. Or for that matter, mislead anyone into thinking there is a unified agenda in SBVM. My opinion does not match the h2g2 staff on a lot of issues, but LeKZ is not my main reason for disagreeing with them. Luckily, this silly group is not restricted enough for me to need to drop out of the SBVM in order for everyone else to have a unified vision on all the various concerns with LeKZ.
I try to remain civil with LeKZ off of h2g2, but I'm not a "friend" of LeKZ and I'm not willing to campaign for LeKZ. I respect your rights to protest the way LeKZ has been treated. I know I'm a minority on SBVM for not wanting to actively campaign for LeKZ, but there should be room here for everyone. You already have the term "FoLKZ" to apply to Friends of LeKZ. You don't need SBVM to be a subset or another name for FoLKZ.

Deidzoeb Posted Jan 16, 2002
Lucinda, I don't understand this sentence: "I was thinking of getting a warning for providing the word 'FoLKZ'..."
You mean you knew that it might get you a warning and you considered doing it anyhow? Or do you mean they almost gave you a warning?

Your in a minority, even in the minority???
H.
Someone else who thinks not *everything* here revolves around a single issue - so I guess I'm in that minority with you...
