Because...
We were forced to read them at school, and they were instrumental in drumming out any love of poetry we might have had, replacing it with an "Oh Gawd, get me out of here - NOW!" reflex reaction to any outbreaks of rhyming other than a dirty limerick.
OK?

(W.H. Auden is quite , though... In a wheelchair, on top of the White Cliffs of Dover, when asked by a BBC reporter whether he had any regrets about his life, he responded "Not enough sex." )

redpeckhamthegreatpompomwithnobson Posted Dec 10, 2004
yes peet i remember seeing that documentary, or a bit from it saying that about 'sex'. He may speak for more of us than the war poets do. I can't seem to find my book of John Dunne's love poems........but I think he was quite specific about sex, rather ahead of his times - rather or****mic

redpeckhamthegreatpompomwithnobson Posted Dec 10, 2004
From our perspective, yes. But do you think the average reader in his time was so hung up on sex as our post Victorian era; I think maybe not..........

bunnyfrog will never die Posted Dec 10, 2004
The thing is in victorian times people still thought a lot about sex they were just expected to be derogatory about it in public. And a poets metaphors are ALWAYS about sex, death or flower arranging.
Oh yeah, down with Thingites while I'm at it.
