Despite burning off nearly 700 cals each time in the gym 3 times a week...
WHY??????????? NO FAIR!!!!!!

I found a calorie calculating site the other day after I read that, and it seems that I'm burning up close to 1,000 calories per day when I swim/exercise/tread water for 1-1/2 hours, 5 days a week.
At that rate of burning calories, I should easily be losing 1-1/2 lbs/week.
The difference in my weight?
Nil.
Nothing.
No change.
I realize I'm building muscle and increasing my stamina, but sheesh, it'd sure be nice to see my clothes getting bigger, my measurements getting smaller, or a change in the scales.

Plateaus are a bitch. I figure when I hit one (obviously I'll have to start losing first!), I'll console myself with the fact that I'm damn fitter than I used to be, and can walk and talk at the same time without being out of breath!

I'm late in writing but thanks to all of you for welcoming me back to the site and giving me encouragement after losing last week.
Talking about plateaux(already) I only lost half a pound this week. I felt like I'd lost more but there you are....some things are unexplainable.
Lady in a Tree you've done so well, so don't be disheartened - that goes for everyone as Queegle put it you are all that much further down the line than when you started and deserve a great big

Tearing my hair out now....still 99.6kg
I'm going mad here. I have been eating the same amount and doing the same, if not more, exercise and yet am not losing the weight.
I knew there'd be a plateau or two along the way but I didn't think it would be this soon or last this long.
I was losing 4kg a month - now it has taken nearly 2 months to lose 3kg...aaaaaaaaargh! I see my nutritionist next Friday and she's going to think I haven't been trying hard enough.
This is so bloody frustrating and infuriating. It is so hard to keep going (Kelli ) but I must as I still have lots more weight to shift ...

I have not really taken the time to read the 700 plus entries that are already here, I freely admit that
But I was told this was the place for me, so can I join the discussion?
I started my weight loss on 26th march this year at a whopping 154,5 kg. Now almost 8 months later I am weighing in at 137,3 kg. So 17,2 kg. so far and still a long way to go.
I have been reading Dr.Phils weight loss book and have been doing fine with that. But lately I have been falling of the wagon and I have been shoveling in food with no end in sight. I don't know what's come over me, but I just can't seem to control myself

We are all hitting a bit of a wall right now. Group !
Looking back, I always find it most difficult to lose weight in the autumn - it is like my system has a link to the seasons and as soon as we put the clocks back I want to EAT. Even worse, I want to eat big stodgy meals fulls of starchy carbs with their thousands of calories, perhaps the same is happening to you?
One of the things I found useful was keep a food diary for a while - not just recording what I ate, but at what time of day and how I was feeling at the time. It helped me recognise patterns of behaviour that were not helpful, and I could then (try to!) avoid the situations where I ate the wrong things.
I've been stuck for a while now (and have bored my fellow losers endlessly about it - thanks for being there guys ) but have changed my contraceptive method today. The quack reckons that my previous method was hindering my weightloss.
So tell us about Dr Phil then Dax? What sort of stuff do you eat?

On the nose... That is exactly what is happening to me

Well, it's really a package deal, it's all about dealing with the emotional stuff that made you overweight in the first place. I really do my own diet and mix in some of the stuff from the Dr. Phil program. For one thing, I don't eat the stuff that is in his book. The book is written for an american audience, and I real don't feel like eating all those american style foods. I'm from Denmark, so I just eat what is normal here.
I have put together my own program, where I try to eat a low carb, low calorie diet, and that has worked for me so far. I still eat cake and sweets sometimes, just not as much as I used to. It works for me and I loose weight slowly but steady...
But lately I have been eating to many calories a day and eating lots of carbs. It's really frustrating, it makes me feel bad, but I can't seem to control myself
I guess I just have to pull myself together and get past this. Maybe I'll read the Dr. Phil book again to boost my spirits

Other than the fact that it all seems to be injected with as much fat and starch as possible, that is.

If the Dr Phil book is like other diet books I've seen from the US, there seems to be a lot of foods used that we don't have in the UK. Sometimes branded things are used that either aren't available or don't have a UK equivalent - or I don't know what they are so can't work out what the UK equivalent would be!
I'm sure Dax can tell us if this is the case for her too.

I am one of those losers Kelli referred to with her nose glued firmly to that brick wall at the moment.
Can I just say you have done brilliantly so far. Well done
I have lost 3 stone myself and I know about the wanting to munch the carbs right now. It is so easy to say "just one extra slice of bread today" and for some reason you feel so much more satisfied and "full up"
I have a bit of a thing for Snack-a-Jacks caramel flavour rice crackers at the moment. They are very low in fat and relatively low in calories but they are carb loaded! For once in my life I am grateful that my local Asda is so cr@p at re-stocking their shelves...they have run out! Hurrah - temptation out of my hands.
Meanwhile, try to stay positive and whenever you are feeling low or scared or just in need of a then drop in and post your probs here. We'll always be here on hand to nudge you in the right direction!

It really does have a lot to do with the fact that you just can't get some of the foods here that you can in america. I didn't mean it as a put down...
Plus here in Denmark it's not really normal to have (for instance) a hot breakfast; oatmeal beeing the only exception...
Ohhh... I LOVE Snack-a-Jacks caramel Unfortunately they are were hard to get here. They have every other flavour, but you have to be really lucky to find caramel anywhere
And in fact, I have been staying positive ever since I posted here the first time. I think I just needed to talk about it with someone... Right now I am making dinner: a jummy curry with veggies and chicken

Ah, I see. And here I'd thought we'd thoroughly innundated every other country in the world with our junky processed foods.
I was thinking in terms of fresh foods - you know, fruits and vegetables, meat, cheese - the sort of thing that shouldn't have too many differences no matter where you go.
... however, there are some exceptions,I know.
~Lamb is readily available in the UK, but available only at a premium price in the US.
~We don't have anything at all like your bacon over here, ours is mostly fat and sold sliced thin. We do have Canadian Bacon, but that's a smoked, fully cooked meat from the deli, so that's different too.
~Although we have a large variety of cheeses in the US, they are generally very mild compared to the cheeses available in the UK, and from what I've heard, most of your cheeses are of the cheddar variety, whereas we have relatively few cheddars available.
The hot breakfast isn't all that common in the US. If you remove percentage of people who won't even eat breakfast, and the tremendous number of people who eat cold cereal for breakfast, or those who just grab a granola bar or pop tart on the way out the door, there's relatively few people in the US who eat a hot breakfast such as eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, waffles, pancakes.
So how do you cook your oatmeal when you have it for breakfast? We generally serve it one of two ways, either as a hot mushy cereal, or as baked oatmeal, which is almost like a cake, but crumblier, and often topped with milk so that it's still eaten with a spoon.

Mix it in a pot, bring to a boil, add a little salt and pour it in a bowl The I eat it with sugar, and sometimes a little milk.
And sometimes when I have leftovers I save it, and then I take the cold leftover oatmeal and cook it on a frying pan like little oatmeal patties I eat those with a little sugar too

Managed to make it to the gym this week, but just the once . Actually caught myself in the mirror and I officially look bigger again, so more more shite shall pass these lips (or at least a lot less). Don't want to get to the stage (again) where I'm just angry with myself, so end up getting depressed and then binging!
Must do gym, it's the only thing that's gonna shift it.
I do like Dr. Phil, about the only 'help' chat show host I can stand!
Winter is a bitch for plateaus, I'm thinking going to the gym will also help me keep warm! Mind you, was vigourously scraping ice from the car for half an hour this morning!

Well done for getting to the gym queegle, once is better than nothing!
I've been having a bit of a mental break from dieting this past couple of weeks, but have continued with the gym. The result? I immediately put 2lb on but no more. I haven't gone mad but have had things I wouldn't normally have, for example yesterday I had a couple of crackers with cheese and pickle as a snack, and today I had a packet of quavers and a normal yoghurt (the shop at work had sold out of the low fat ones). I have decided not to get stressed about it for a while.
Am on holiday next week, so much less exercise, but will try not to go too mad foodwise.
I will start back on omitting the naughties when I get back. and see how much I've put on...
