Sh@gging is English.
I have never understood how Americans can scr€w... it sounds most uncomfortable for both parties.
Sh@g, somehow, tends to give a picture of joyously bouncy activity...
No more comments from me on this thread, I think...

>>English kids have long tended to chuckle just becase of one word in the first line of the following ditty:
The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag.
The reason you will see, no doubt:
It is to keep the lightning out.
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears will come with buns
And steal the bags to keep the crumbs.<<

Never crossed my mind...I'm a pipe smoker.
Generally oblivious to double entendres.
I'm similarly impervious to implied insults.
One of the benefits of being "thick".

I remember when I was a teenager in Canada (many moons ago) that the term 'screw' was used in the same way as 'shag' is in Britain. But these days the word is mostly used in the sense of 'doing the dirty' on someone. As in, to screw someone out of money, for example. Or someone might say 'I've been totally screwed', meaning they had been the victim of some double-dealing or nastiness. I think the use of the word 'screw' in North America to mean having sex is no longer in general practice.

hi pdante,
According to my trusty Collins Dictionary, the etymology of religion is as follows: via Old French from Latin 'religio', fear of the supernatural, piety - probably from 'religare', to tie up, from RE + ligare, to bind.
So your take on it meaning 'to join' or 'together' seems to fit in with this.

pdante,
Exactly! When someone now says - screw you! - they don't mean that this person should be having sex. It's meant as 'to hell with you!' That's the wonderful thing about language. It is a living thing and continues to grow and change all the time.

hi Oetzi,
<>
toxxin and I are now on friendly terms after many months of not being on friendly terms at all. This has taken a lot of effort and understanding on both our parts. I presume you were joking, but really, you cannot just share what other people have worked on to achieve.
I appreciate the idea that you would like to be my friend. But I really don't know you very well and one cannot ever 'push' friendship. So why not just relax and see if it ends up happening naturally?

hi Bix,
Often this thread takes some 'time out' with some of the regulars just having a chat about this and that.
If you have something to say about the existence of God then please do so. It will help get us back on track!

Havent got ref; to hand but memory serves as Fascist (to bind)(again and Faggot (to bind )(again)i think they share the same root so its a (doubly stupid insult )(asn simple though my pleasures are watching stupidity go from this small comedy routine in some cave somewhere that now is Prime Time entertainment(if that's the right word
