The reason I drink G&T is because it protects me from scurvy and malaria at the same time.

Right, so since I have time, it currently looks like I'll be going over on Friday and then flying on to Ireland on Monday.
So I need to know - is it logistically better to fly (into Stansted, in this case) or to take the train to St Pancras? Both will take about the same amount of time and cost the same, since it would take me four hours to even get to the airport from here
And can anyone recommend cheap hotels or youth hostels? I can't take up anybody's couch for that long

Could try http://www.st-christophers.co.uk/
I'd go with the train.

Thanks! I was afraid it'd be a lot more expensive
And I think the train is the better option, too. It involves changing trains less frequently than going to Cologne Airport would

Oh, and since I'm flying out to Ireland on the Monday after - is Gatwick or Heathrow handier?

Mal, it depends where you are staying in London and where you are flying to.
Heathrow Airport can be reached by the Piccadilly Underground line.
Using London Victoria as a departure point:
Take the district line to Hammersmith, then change to the Piccadilly line to Heathrow. To Terminal 5 takes just under an hour.
The Heathrow Express rail service via Paddington, from London Victoria:
Take the District line to Eark's Court, then take the lift and walkway to the other platform and then the District line to Paddigton. Please check the destination of the train... You need the Edgware Raod service... It takes around twenty minutes by underground, then fifteen minutes by train.
Gatwick Airport also has two main options.
Overground rail services from Victoria Station via platforms 15 - 19, taking around thirty to forty minutes. The ticket price is between £5 - £10.90 single.
Alternatively there is the Gatwick Express from Vitoria station (platform 13) which costs £16.90 single, and takes 30 minutes.
I hope that helps.
You can e-mail me if you want further assistance or advice.

Btw, there are coach services as well (which should be cheaper) , I just went for the faster option...

Not sure where I'll be staying yet. If I don't find anything else, it'll probably be this youth hostel: http://tinyurl.com/cbsses
But it sounds like it doesn't matter much which airport I use.
