I think that if you click on '1* new post' it takes you to the right bit, if you go to the end of the page you can see where you know up to
* or whatever

Thanks DeeKayBee but I'm afraid I can't spot where it says "1 new post", can you point me in the right direction please.

Auntie Prue here, SmallTownGirl - it feels a bit like we are all meeting up behind the bike sheds in the dinner hour, to smoke or read the dirty bits out of novels!
Any minute now, Peggy will turn up and give us all a sound telling off, and insist we return to Mustardland forthwith.
Have fun
Cheers

Siouxie, when you hit "Latest reply", you're shown the page containing the last post to the thread. Hit the "End" key (usually in the middle of a small cluster to the right of your "Return" key) to instantly scroll down to the bottom.
As for who's replying to who, it's mayhem out there! If you're not sure who a message is in reply to, (and you have an h2g2 account) just click the little "In reply to this message" link at the top of the posting and you'll be scrolled up to the post being replied to.

Hello SeaN - glad you made it over here - I think if we play with the toys here for a while, we can have some fun - and get to know what features we really want when we move here properly.
Cheers anyway
Prue

Sea N i'm finding this really clunky and very slow to load and negociate, let alone skim through a hundred messages while the kettle boils.
Like rats in mazes we're all supposed to post our messages then run back tidily to our nests and work on our journals for two hours until someone recognises us and either replies or rings the dinner bell.
Currently distrust this set-up, mostly because the personalities are given more importance than the interaction. And the smileys are bringing me out in a rash already.
Less is more!

Thanks for the reply Peet but I must be really blind because I can't see anything saying "latest reply" either.
Perhaps I should give up and start afresh tomorrow.

What is this 'little "In reply to this message" link at the top of the posting'?
You can reach the message to which a message replies, by clicking on the upper blob of the 5-blob key which is near the bottom right-hand corner of the message. At least, you can with the "brunel" skin; the "alabaster" skin lacks these 5-blob keys. So am I using the wrong skin? I think it is most confusing, for some skins to lack some features. I did not expect some of the skins not to work.

I'm just testing those little 5-blob things as WL suggested they may actually have some utility.

Su, when you look at the list of "My Conversations", each one should have four links associated with it: The title of the conversation, which takes you to the start, the time you last posted there, which takes you to your last posting, allowing you to scroll through all the replies since, the time of the most recent posting (if there is one) which takes you to the page containing the most recent posting, and an "Unsubscribe" link that stops you being informed about the posting.
On my skin it looks like:

I think the blob things are quite useful, not sure about the ones on either side of the central one,as I haven't tried them but the top one and the middle one and the bottom one are quite useful.

Those keys enable you to step through a conversation in thread order. It's not nearly as convenient as the conversation being /laid/ /out/ /on/ /screen/ in thread order, but it's something: After reading a message
1) If its bottom blob is brown, click that. You'll be taken to the first reply to the message. This is like the indentation moving rightwards one step in ML. If that blob is grey, the message has no replies, so:
2) If its right-hand blob is brown, click that. You'll be taken to the next reply of this message's parent. This is like the indentation staying the same in ML. If that blob is grey, the message is its parent's latest reply, so:
3) If its top blob is brown, click that. You'll be taken to the message's parent. You'll have seen this one before. Now go to step 2. If the top blob is grey, you've finished.

thank you for this very clear explanation of the Blobs, WL. I haven't quite understood it yet but I hope to learn it soon. Things like this tend to blow my mind somewhat. I don't have a very good spatial mind (I can't do those spatial things on intelligence tests very easily).

as this is the 'outhouse' I wonder if it's time to start the 'which way should you hang the bogroll' discussion?

woofti aka groovy gravy Posted Apr 10, 2005
it's actually counter-intuitive when you compare it with ML, isn't it. grrrr. I wonder, though, whether we shall have the Blobs in New Mustardland?

dagesh how restrained of you to call it counter-intuitive.
I feel completely lost without italics or other emphasis.

We've been promised those in the new Mustardland, but just not from the outset. They'll move us over, then write the code for that feature. They want us to go onto a fully-tested site first...

Re: my posting above, Alabaster users might want to note they only get the first and third options... You can't jupm to *your own* last posting in Alabaster, just the beginning or end of the thread.
