Unfortunately we're heading more towards Venice than Rome, but if I see dear Mr. Popey, I shall say Salve/Ave! from you all

Oh Magistra! any progress on the tutorial front? We appear to be having a class riot here
Vale for now!

Salve!
My latin vocabulary isn't that bad, I usually pick up words quite well. The problem I am having is with the different endings for the different cases and genders and tenses and conjuctions and all the rest of it.

Well, you'll have all those endings nice and simple when the tutorials are done! If they're done... Maybe my plan of bombarding you with all the endings all at once isn't working out very well. Most books usually teach them to you a few at a time, but since I learn better with them all at once, I thought other people might feel the same way... maybe I'll rework the system a bit?
Sorry guys, am just popping back for a couple days in between family holidays, just enough time to try and clear up the backlog. I'll try to get to it tomorrow - if not, it will have to wait until Tuesday, at which point I will have two whole weeks at your disposal!
Looks like we may have a new discipula/us - I greeted them on the Language Thing join-up thread.
I really promise I'll do something productive when I finish being dragged about to all the ends of North America - you guys are such terrific eager discipuli that you put me to shame!

no, Magistra, you're such a wonderful magistra
i'm away in patches for the next few weeks, so don't be over-active on my account
I think what we need to do is have a few ending,e.g. for one conjugation in one tense. then you give us examples of verbs and then phrases to explain it with. Then we could do exercises: I would suggest little translations, but I haven't got a dictionary, so I'd be shooting myself in the foot there
We will welcome them most gratiously when they arrive! How could we do that in Latin?

Oh ooh, and have fun with the vacation...
Vamster's said it all !
I do better with all the conjugations in french class too, because it shows me the differences, and is easier to keep track of. (e.g. a list to refer to)

i agree too- in normal classes, that's exactly what I'd do. I'm a bit dictionary-happy and use words i don't know, so i use the conjugation tables. I just think that seeing as we're learning this in an extremely part-time way, maybe slower, but active, would be better
Vale!

I'm now trying to learn past tense, which is probably a mistake as I'm not completely sure about present tense yet.

echomikeromeo Posted Jun 22, 2005
No problem as long as you think you can handle it, Athena - but better make sure *which* past tense you're learning. There are a few. I'd recommend going ahead with imperfect, if you think you can handle it (it's the one with the 'ba' endings) but perfect and pluperfect's endings are so radically different that you actually don't learn it until second year.

Hi pinkwrath, welcome to the Latin department
Have you signed up at the main Language Thing page yet? It's at A1145477. If not, please do so, as we are a department of the Language Thing and run through them. If so, well, welcome. Have a look round the main department page (A3235628) and find the right threads for you!

Great! Kat or Joe will welcome you very soon. (Kat is the official welcomer, organiser, etc, and Joe has an administrative role as well).
Have you had any experience with Latin at all? If so, I'd like to know where your previous experience extends to, so I know where to start. If so, also, you should be on the Learning Latin thread at F1934059?thread=520904. If not, this Beginners' thread is the right place for you. You also might want to check out the Latin tutorials I've been working on at A4103010.
Unfortunately, due to the end of school and subsequent family holidays on my part, the department has somewhat ground to a standstill in the last few weeks. However, once I get back from yet another visit to relatives this weekend, I will be at the Department's disposal for the next six weeks, and which point I'll write more of the tutorials and do some proper teaching.
Welcome, and have fun!
