Here's a thought for the day, cross-posted from a different blog:

Re corporate media, the purpose of "news" is to deliver an audience to advertisers at the lowest possible cost. Any actual information transmitted to the viewer is purely coincidental.

The "audience" is not a group to be served, it is the "product" corporate media sells to the advertisers (aka other corporations). The customer of corporate media is not the viewer/audience, it is the advertiser.

Fabulous warm and dry southerly wind today. Wood chopping and then delivered logs to a friend. A good afternoon.

Lil, that's the kind of gobbledygook that people should be shot for.

Hummm we appear to be in two places at once, here and in a departure lounge somewhere.

That Noesis link that Dr. Zen just posted is something you all need to bookmark. We only have a couple of days left and if there's any kind of downtime -- and there will be at least 6 hours -- then I will be at the transit lounge.

The big question is, should I launch a new conversation when the transition is complete?

Eats, it is a bit poorly expressed -- it was a comment, not an essay, but in respect of US news "shows" the guy has a point. Media and politics are poll-driven now. Even commercial websites with ads have to demonstrate that they are getting a certain number of eyes (in pairs, I think). Retaining advertisers, hence funding, thus controls content. I think that's what he's saying.

Dizzy the Void

Dr. Zen, that's what I like to call a "Space Paradox." (As opposed to a time paradox, you see.)

Whoops, simulpost with Lil.

I'm reminded of a website I heard of once -- I can't remember any of the details -- which had some content that some of its advertisers didn't like. So they created a second version of the site on a separate URL that delivered the same content, but without the advertisements from the objectors, and then they set up filters so that the objected-to content didn't appear on the main site. I couldn't help but think that was clever, although I don't know how well or how long they'd be able to get away with it depending on how they distributed the link to the second version. I wish I could remember more details.

I think that a new conversation would be a good idea: after all, we're all going to have to clear out of the salon until the comfy sofas are back smiley - zzz

Phil

I love these barmy summer nights. I've just been out doing a bit of star and planet gazing wearing a short sleeved top. Nice and clear and warm. Two planets seen in the sky, a galaxy and a whole host of stars smiley - biggrin

Good Doctor Zomnker (This must be Tuesday," said GDZ to himself, sinking low over his Dr. Pepper, "I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.")

I think a new conversation would be in order after the move.

I resumed learning German yesterday, haven't spoken it in nearly 20 years. I'm pretty much starting over. I must say that Rosetta Stone is definitely different than classroom learning!

*The kitchen is now being packed and crated and moved out*

Heh, they refused to move the fridge because of the crisper drawer. But that's OK, I've been thinking about getting a new energy-efficient one.

We move outside tomorrow, with picnic food and paper plates and plastic sporks. Barbeque on the beach, tombstone party while the salon is taken apart and moved to the new place. I'm getting the sofas re-upholstered.

I s'pose you've got all the food 'n wine 'n that in one of those wicked baskets, mmm?

Not sure I'll have time but if I possibly can I'll join you. Bring a wicked basket of me own 'cos one can't have too much food 'n wine etc. for an event like this.

Titania (gone for lunch)

Seems the geese flew south too early - today is indeed quite warm and sunny.

I hate early morning meetings that turn out to be twice as long as stated originally, thereby efficiently ruining your schedule for the day. Hmph!

Rev Nick - dead man walking (mostly)

Ours are just beginning to group. It seems odd to see some go north-east for a time ... But soon enough, great gaggles of them will be honking over-head.

Perhaps the largest fright in my life, 3'ish in the morning of a foggy October in central Manitoba. Out on a military exercise, in an elevated guard look-out ... Eyes peeled for expected intrusions.

And maybe 50 some Canada geese honked less than 30 feet over my head, all at once!

Ho yus, we have food and wine and the magic champagne bottle. There will be barbequed chicken and ribs, potato salad and cole slaw, several kinds of bread, vegetable munchies and crisps, and a tent. And there will be a bonfire, and maybe Phil will set up his telescope on the beach.

We are the guests of the BBC until Monday. When it comes to the day of the Tombstone, you all should be with me at the transit lounge, here:

There's also a Facebook Atelier, which is suddenly taking on new people that I've never met in advance of the big move. No researcher will be left behind. <-- That should be said with the mic on reverb.

Lil, thanks for all the coaching so we don't lose track of one another. I don't often check Facebook anymore, but I did register with Noesis so I could hang out at the Transit Lounge. One way or another, I'll be one more 'hanger on' for the duration of the transfer.
