I just spent a week in Netherlands. Summer holidays are over. Hitchhiker movie is seen, I liked it.

re: post 2052 -- "buy a bog house we could live in as a family"
I've been on H2G2 too long -- the term 'bog' is ingrained now.
I read that as an outhouse, and didn't even slow down to question it
Well, Mr D did say it was a funny thought....

Finished the book, no spoilers from me either; all I'll say is that having read ~600 pages in 6 hours (so Andy could read it after me) has left me with the strange sensation that words are slooshing about in my head like a sea. I'm going to go do some gardening, I think, well, mowing of the lawn, at any rate...

Ben, I like your story. Funny.
And I hope the headache is gone by now.
And Hati, of course we missed you.
David, I wonder if we should be more alliterative with our collective noun. How about a lexicon of librarians?
I got pulled over for speeding this morning. Fortunately, the policeman gave me a warning instead of a ticket. But I had to listen to the 'we have speed limits for everyone's protection' lecture. I used to lecture him about never doing his reports on time and making me keep the library open late so he could finish. What goes around comes around. He enjoyed it just a bit too much. It will be all over town by dark.

Speeding librarians? It's against nature. *shakes antennae*
I've finished reading.

Small towns eh, Hyp?
The headache is now almost imperceptible: it's there but I can hardly feel it. I still feel shattered though, as if I'd been hit by a truck.
Regarding the HP - I found the last one way too long, and I also had problems remembering who was who and what was what after the huge gap between it and the previous one.
I don't want spoilers, (actually I don't give a dandy doo-dah about spoilers, but I know other people don't want them here), but I'd appreciate the views of those who've read the lastest on whether or not I should bother with it, and whether or not I should plough though the others first to remind me of the plots.

Come to think I never read the 5th book as I had tendonitis or something when I got it and I found the book too heavy for reading. I can't read at the desk.
Maybe now it's about a time...

This probably isn't the right place to admit this, but I think the whole HP thing is overblown. The books are enjoyable, and I'm thrilled that so many kids read them. I'm for almost anything that encourages kids to read. But to be honest, the reaction they get indicates that they are lots better than other kid's books, and that just isn't the case.
I remember when Sorcerer's Stone was released here. It literally died on my shelf. After a year it had been checked out twice. Then the second one appeared along with a complaint from some right-wingers that it was unsuitable. It was at that point that people wanted to read them. But I wonder what would have happened if the controversy hadn't appeared. I suspect that Rowling would be much poorer today.
On the other hand, there are other series and authors who are challenged all the time and who haven't gotten a hundredth of the publicity. Maybe HP was destined to be a blockbuster series regardless.

i loved your comments on library-wars, Hypatia! Do you think I might be able to adapt them to other work environments, like a mortgage company?
As to a specific plural for librarians, I think it should be either a shelf or a lexicon of librarians...but I lean toward shelf, because of the mental imagery.

I decided, for reasons of heat and grumpiness, not to go into nodnoL to the meet.
I stayed at home and played with my plants - three new types of agapanthus
Then I did this: http://test.realage.co.uk/ and am 2 yrs younger than my actual age.
NB the bit about flossing

1.3 years younger. Did you see the presenter-girlie's face when she thought Des Lynham was going to out her age on TV?

0,5 years older and I had to cheat with the region. I guess I did that well just because I don't drive a car. My recent health problems cost me few days or weeks for sure.

Hallo there Hati, welcome back in!
For those who want to discuss HP, which I only bought this afternoon but won't be cracking open for another few days, you know we have a spoilers' corner over in the library.
I'm exhausted. It was so hot last night I couldn't sleep, especially when Precious kept trying to warm me up with her own body heat. And this morning's meeting was a total bunfight. I don't know how I'm going to reconstruct the motions, what with people interrupting and talking all over each other.

Well, I did the full on quiz at Real Age's own website and came out 8 years older. *mutter* *mutter* *mutter*.
They didn't like the fact I don't have airbags in the car, which doesn't actually make me older, it just makes me more likely to die younger. Doh! And does anyone who isn't an American actually *know* their colesterol count if they are healthy? Or their blood pressure? Mind you, my social life and diet have gone to hell in a handcart recently because of working away from home and living in a B&B. It assumes that if you are in a relationship you are co-habiting, which I found very odd indeed, and as a result they are assuming that I am single and getting no nookie at all.
Anyways, I am actually going to have a snooze. I woke up with another this morning. Thank the goddess and Glaxo Smith-Kleine for horsepills.

The test site doesn't seem to be working for me, which is good as I suspect a bad result.
Welcome back, Hati!
Spent last night making Russian salads so I don't have to turn on the oven for the next few days. Must curb my tendency to assume every vegetable must be boiled for at least three hours before it is edible.
Right, bit of last minute cleaning to do then off to the national gallery to meet Grandad.

Morning all. Had a fantastically good evening chattering like a magpie with the good people of Hootoo Nation, including a goodly handful of Salonistas - hi you guys! Am, well, not exactly hung over, as I managed three pints well spread out (ooh, I'm sensible) but definitely somewhat kippered about the larynx and hair and my nose has been rendered non-functional by a little nosebleed I had in the pub. This morning it's blocked with dried blood. Goodness how repellant, you may be thinking. Well, yes, and it's not even your nose. But S (who had a touch of heat-stroke, I think, which is why he didn't turn up for the Meet) is up and about and making me a bacon butty, so I can be as collapsed as I like.
B- so sorry your poor head kept you away. Migraines are the very living hell. Lots of sympathy and I really do hope you can make it next time.
Sol - I am taking you fairly seriously about the Elgar. Which day is it on?
And now, I am going to read the new Harry Potter and try to not get ketchup on the pages as it's really for my Mum and little sister - I'm just quality checking it, no really...

We had a good time at Guilfest, we saw: Hal, The Subways (recognised a couple of tracks), The Others (recognised one track), Echo and the Bunneymen (recognised several, natch) and the brilliant, almost local lad Paul Weller. He even sang his cover version of Wishing on a Star which is the theme tune to the 10th Kingdom tv series. The weather was glorious, families were there with picnic chairs and rugs, good behaviour on the whole and fairly reasonable wine on sale. Slightly hungover this morning.
H is busily preparing a brunch. Sun is shining again and all is good.
