There should be no history articles in the Edited Guide. Discuss.

Oof, Amy, now I've got to THINK on a Sunday?
But I thought you put your points very well and for what it's worth, I agree with you.
Just been watching the London Marathon and feeling like a big sluggish slug. Even eejits dressed as chickens can do it. Why am I so lazy? Best make another cup of tea and find some biscuits...

My initial reaction to that statement is that writing about anything, even in a travelouge, one must really put *some* history in to the piece. The few EG entries I have written entirely by myself tend to have a little local history added to them. I also tried to have some humour added to at least one of them to make it more like what I envisioned the Guide to be. I've stopped writing EG entries for my own reason, but have recently thought of authoring a couple more and collaborating on yet others.
The way that I envision the Guide (fromt eh books) is a hand held device that would automagically start you off by presenting articles based on your physical location. It would obviously allow for hyperlinking to other entries, as well as have a search mechinisim to look for other entries. It might allow users to post a bit about the particular locations they are in, so as to make the database more complete. I believe that was the point of the h2g2 mobile solution that was scrapped upon our host's (the beeb) aquisistion of the site. I've heard rumour that the mobile edition is back on track, but can't place my source for that. I would dearly love to see an actual handheld guide, one that I could then use to upload my thoughts on Cary, North Carolina, or Mom's Diner down the street. I truely believe that a HHGTT Earth would be one of the best ways that we can honour DNA's life and impact on ours.
Amy, I think that I agree with most of what you wrote in the other thread. I don't know for sure if my vision of what the Guide should be is in any way similar to your's but I think it may be.

Yes, Marv, the new mobile edition was just launched:

Amy, your response was well composed and I agree with it.

Having had a quick look at the link Amy posted, I like others here think you've argued your point well Amy.
After watching the end of the elite section of the marathon (over a cooked breakfast) went out to tackle the compost heap. There is now a black plastic dalek style compost bin over the reworked heap and a couple of bags worth of good compost from the bottom of the pile. Amazing. Stick all the stuff to make compost in a heap and leave it for a couple of years and then look at it and you've got good stuff from waste! Make soil, save the earth! Better go back out and help MC doing other stuff in the garden now.
On summaries, how about a summary of the last x posts where x is somewhere between 100 and 500 (or possibly more).

Just back from 24 hours with friends. Very pleasant it was too, plenty of good conversation, food and wine.
Cassie lept out of the undergrowth to greet us as we got out of the car. We had a long chat, before she disappeared off out again.

Thanks for the support . Unfortunately the discussion will almost certainly turn nasty. It's important to tread carefully.
On a related note, today I was asked a question about the beginnings of time in the h2g2 sense and, via F44441?thread=626401 , I found the animated researcher avatars that weren't used in the end. An example is http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/B894

I agree about the conversation turnign nasty, which is why I posted my thoughts here in this lifeboat of civility, instead of into the gaping maw of discord.

I believe Jo Brand was running in the London Marathon today and hoping to finish before the guy in the diving boots.
Jolly well done, Jo!
I really should be doing something with my assorted compost heaps too. One of them is full of ants - but is also full of lovely, big juicy worms.
I wish those would just live in one part of the garden. They could have the nice dry area under the shed - and I'd even put wee treats out for them if they'd leave the rest of the garden alone.
To date this morning - Teuchter 6: Slugs & Snails 0
Re the history element of the EG - I think history is relevant to just about everything. Everything has some kind of 'history' and by referring to it, one can find perspective and make sense of its current status and can have some indication of how it might develop or evolve.

It is distressing that so many conversations do turn ugly.
I have to go into the library today and work on reports. I'd much rather spens it in my yard. My raspberries arrived and need planted.

Very wise, Marv. I've set myself up to be accused of being a champion of mediocrity, a defender of lies and distortions, a supporter of the ruination of the English language and a prime example of why DNA is spinning in his grave.
All in a day's work .

Sorry, simulposts. I'll leave it to someone else to sort out the word game.
Teuchter, ants like slightly damp conditions, so if the sand under the shed is bone dry they won't like it. Also, at this time of year they'll be after protein supplies for their young - insects and/or grains and seeds.

Per the rules, in the event of a simulpost the most recent one will be used.

Still got the cough, not as bad as last night but still bad enough that I will not be attending services this morning.

I seem to be getting the upper hand on my allergies thanks to the meds and possibly a lessening of pollen in the air. I could hardly believe the sheer amount of pollen that adhered to everything out of doors over hte last couple of weeks.
