Something they do at DailyKos to indicate that they are not launching an independent subtopic is to just type a few randow characters in the subject line, like this.

I think the auto-summary feature is intended for more coherent text rather than conversations with constantly changing topics. I'd be willing to edit the auto-summary to make it more readable.

Another approach could be to split the scribing, 1st-1000-post scribe and 2nd-1000-post scribe. The scribes' notes could be combined for new thread, and the mid-thread summaries could be dismissed.

Personally I think I would constantly forget to change the subject header, although I suppose with time I would become more habituated to it.

Have a go at him or have a go at me?

Let's just leave things as they've always been. Dr D and ltp have just demonstrated that we're not going to remember to change the headers and I don't want the bother or disruption of a 500-post summary. They'll break the flow and encourage rehashes of topics we've left behind.

Being a Salonista is not a lifestyle choice. If you're a Salonista, you know it and part of being a Salonista is embracing the backlog smiley - smiley.

Even if that embrace is a rushing tackle. I personally love having hundreds of posts of backlog to play with. While I sometimes lose the plot, it t is interesting to see where conversations go.

It's Saturday afternoon and we have entered the Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul over here.

I have no remarks to make on scribing, as I have no opinions. Sorry. I woke up every hour on the hour last night and my brain is making fizzing popping noises and blowing smoke.

A lot happier now... the annoying newbie told me that I wasn't helping by asking him to stop typing in caps so I was very verbose at him and then officially turned my back. I have washed my hands of the matter and will not bother responding to anymore childishness.

Anyway...
The holiday I'm supposed to be going on next week is falling apart. My dad wass whinging about spending a whole week on Skye so we compromised and said well divide the time between Skye and Edinburgh. Then he was whinging about having to go to Skye at all because it's grey and miserable (of course it is! It's the Western Isles!) so we decided to just spend a week in Edinburgh. Now my mum can't arrange accommodation in Edinburgh so it looks like where going to spend a week on Skye, but my dad's started whinging about spending a whole week on Skye...smiley - wah I need a smiley - stiffdrink.

Perhaps we'll have a quiet weekend here in the salon, with not much backlog.

Counting on my fingers, it looks like I'm going to make the rent again. smiley - smiley

Good Doctor Zomnker (This must be Tuesday," said GDZ to himself, sinking low over his Dr. Pepper, "I never could get the hang of Tuesdays.")

The only problem I see with using the subject line, what if we decide to play a subject line game again? After thinking about it, leaving things the way they are is probably best. We should look into the possibility of two scribes.

Have finally got the sprinkler head fixed. It took 4 hours to do because I got sidetracked by another project but, the shed is cleaned up and reorganized. smiley - smiley Now, I have to raise one sprinkler head about 1/2 inch, level out the area that was dug up for the new pipe, and weed n feed the lawn.

GDZ, you are shaving yaks. Sometimes it seems like it is a productivity killer, but it is needed regradless.
See http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/Y/yak-shaving.html for details.

Amy, I was wrong about the lego difference engine. It was not made of lego. It was meccano. It is in the premiere issue of Make Magazine, a new quarterly in the US that is a delight for a tinkerer.

Ah, Meccano, that takes me back smiley - bigeyes. I had a Meccano set when I were a lass...

The are lots of lego difference engines in existence. It's a common task set to able students at maffs camps.

Never had Meccano, but by the time I were knee-high to a grasshopper it wasn't really around much anymore. And I was never allowed Lego Technic because my parents said it was too expensive... with hindsight it probably *was* but I was ten and I wanted to build a racing car.

S is watching the snooker, so practically I have the rest of the evening to myself. what to do? What to do? Confess to being slightly too tipsy to get on with knitting lace stoles....

I loved lego when I was small. We used to make spaceships with roofs you could take off and wee control rooms and sleeping quarters inside (made up by yours truly, who was a SF&F nut from birth). It was such fun. And one of the few games my sister and I could play without having a shrieking fight and trying to disembowel each other.
