There are some predictable things about the arrival of a new thread. The new conversation generally arrives when I'm having breakfast. It seems to be the fairest time, globally, except for antipodeans, of which we have none currently. The conversation also arrives on a weekday because so many salonistas have rich lives that take them to mini-meets, medieval re-enactments, and football games.

Gushing about the greatness of marriage at single people? Ick. I have seen enough ucky marriages to think singledom a jolly clever idea. I occasionally gush about the marvellousness of singledom at married people. They stare at my left hand and think I've gone off my rocker. Well, yes, but if I hadn't met someone as wonderful as S I jolly well'd be staying single, I assure you. As it is I occasionally daydream about not having to share the duvet and being allowed to NOT watch the Grand Prix or the snooker. And dating. is dating as fun as it looks? I haven't done any for nearly twelve years now, I've forgotten.

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am... Posted Mar 11, 2005

You're right there Hyp... I read somewhere recently (and then had it confirmed by JS-W the Biologist) that the reason why people put on weight so easily and that there are so many overweight people is that the change in diet from simple local produce to high-fat, high-sugar convenience foods is going faster than evolution can cope with.

Kelli, Kelli, Kelli!
Not all thin people look upon people heavyier than them selves as FAT people. Nor do they necessarily find them funny. Much of that is more our own conception of what we think others perceive us as. We are what we are. I probably wouldn't have lost the weight I did if it wasn't for my doctor telling me that I could control it now or look forward to needles. And at my age I found that walking up and down stairs became less a problem for my knees after a significant loss. But the best part was getting on the talking scales and it no longer told me, "Only one person on at a time!"

That is bad news about Dave Allen. He had such a dry sense of humour, he'd probably have appreciated the irony of the news of his death being announced on Comic Relief's big day. I used to love his shows, and I hope the BBC will repeat some of them now. A lot of his humour was pretty timeless.

I remember the 'I don't drink water. Fish in water.' remark. I nearly fell off the sofa laughing. Indeed, a all round in memory of Dave Allen.

kelli, that is one of those times that remind me of a classic line:
"She may be fat, but she can lose weight. You, on the other hand, will always be ugly."

Be careful, Dont want to pick on us Uglies. I knew I should have listened to my mom when she told me if I kept making those faces ----

I remember Dave Allen, especially for his hilarious impression of the Rev. Iam Paisley... and there was a skit he did that I never forgot.
[Allen, as Robin Hood, aproaches two of his Merrie Men, carrying a rifle]
Look at this, Merrie Men! It's the new technology! It will make our bows and arrows obsolete.
[Merrie Man #1 takes the rifle, notches it to his bow, pulls and lets go. The rifle drops to the ground immediately in front of them. Everyone looks down at the rifle.]
[Cut.]

Ormy, I apologize for not wishing you a happy birthday earlier. Blame it on the end of term and a lack of sleep!
Kelli, I'm not thin. I used to be larger. I remember once, about 15 years ago, I lost a significant amount of weight. Suddenly, people who had never talked to me before started talking to me. Suddenly, I was acceptable to them. And you know what? The weight came back, only now I was larger than before. It took me a long time to figure out why I went from being interested in being healthy to wanting to be healthy and not caring if I was. My fat was a filter, as it were. *real* people didn't care about my weight, but the fake ones did.
That said, I've been steadily losing weight (well, until recently, anyway!), and have adjusted myself accordingly, but the self perception remains. That's the hard part to give up. Pounds can be taken off, but mental attitudes remain. Now, I'm not so worried about the scale, or about what other people say. If someone tells me I'm looking good, I say thank you, and mentally remind myself that the person's whose opinions matter most are my own. If *I* like what I see in the mirror (and other than the infamous Hille butt I've inherited, and the chicken wings under my arms, I do), then things are good.
But I understand your rage. I have a friend who just did a research paper on fat bias, using a thin interviewer and herself (she's upwards of 300 pounds) to ask the same questions about a set of photographs featuring thin and no-so-thin men and women. The thin woman got a lot more candid responses, and had a much easier time with the interviews. If you would like, I could send you a copy. Quite interesting reading.
