And 'Nancy Drew' is now very popular with my eldest grand-child. We sent her a 6-pack of starter novels of ND, and a 6-pack of the Hardy Boys, for her birthday last year. She's loving them all ...

My personal favorite paper so far? The one that wrote that according to Bacon, pre-moderning thinking was "like a dumpster in which trash just accumulates."

Mornin All
First dawn with the clocks having gone back. Stupid British hangover from Bob knows when but the managed to keep their legs crossed until 6am when I let them out. Dawn was just lighting up the East. Autumn is here, Winter looms.

All the comments about bacon are making me hungry.
Bacon, bacon, bacon. Streaky, back or middle. Smoked or dry cured.
Summer time ends and there are the usual arguments about why should it end and why not keep it going. Pah, why have it in the first place if it only causes so much confusion and argument.

GO SOX!!!! What a turnaround. Remember seeing Ben Affleck on the Daily Show of 15 October bemoaning hte fact that all he's seen was the defeat at Fenway in the ALCS and since then 7 straight wins. It also means I can possibly get to bed at reasonable hours here for the rest of the week. And not do work on 2 hours of shut eye.
Lil I know you American's all have a share in the White House but to own the whole West Wing I think you're paying too much in taxes.
And Bagbuss Robert I King of Scotland was actually Robert de Bruce or really Robert de Brieux due to his Scoto-Norman ancestry.

Summertime
and the living is easy
...a Danish newspaper reported this weekend that the energy savings for our small country on summer time (DST) is around 1 billion DKK (or a little less than 200 mill USD or somewhere in the vicinity of 150 mill EUR - both according to me calculation in my head so beware).
Why? Hmmm - but empirically, the power companies can see that the power consumption drops 4-6% on the grid when DST starts - and goes back up to "normal" when it ends.
In CO2 reductions, it should be 175000 to 350000 tons per year.
Now, that sounds as if it gets my vote for staying on!

Well I have done it and commited myself to buying a special barrier to stop noise from below. It is a type of carpet underlay but based on very dense rubber and sold by a specialist noise reducing company.
It is not cheap at £48 for a 2mx1.2m sheet but I really don't know what else to do. I hope to be able to put it under my existing floor and just buy carpet tiles as a temporary thing to go on top. The barrier will cost £336 as have tried to fit it into shape of room to avoid more sheets as not cheap. It has the very attractive name of "10kg Barrier Mat", indeed the world of underflooring is a glamorous thing.
.
He was honest and said it won't stop all noise, just cut it down a bit. I went with them as have spoken to them before and they have always been honest and said what they sell won't stop all noise as can still travel through walls, etc , they have alwys been very helpful too which helps in the confusing world of insulation.
.
I am finding it difficult spending so much money for not great leeps in improvement each time however I have to hope that selling flat will be easier in furure if Mr Loud Voice and Noisey Kid are still there as will put off viewers of flat.

there's a lot of films i love, but i can't say i have a favorite. some of my favorites, however, happen to be orlando, amelie, the big lebowski and about a hundred others.
as far as series i have on dvd, there are only a few that i own the complete set of: star trek: the next generation, buffy the vampire slayer, monty python, prime suspect, weeds, kids in the hall, battlestar galactica, nip/tuck, the sopranos, farscape, monk, and deadwood. hmm... i guess that's more than a few...

Blimey, you've been a chatty lot while I was away at the Turku Herring Market - almost 200 new posts!
>>I have the entire Inspector Lynley series ordered from a place called Caiman. They sell new DVDs for quite a bit less than Amazon. I should get hem next week.
Overstock.com usually has better prices than Amazon, too.>>
I've found pricerunner dot com to be a helpful tool when comparing prices - I use it regularly when buying books.

Strangely have you looked at "white noise" seem to recall reading article a couple of year ago where a background noise is played cancels out another..some even operate on switching on and off according to the level of pollutant ..all of which can be operated from computer
(could be why when a tree fall in forest the growing tree does the same..)

Busy backlog weekend. I caught parts of it...
I spent Saturday trying to assemble a costume for that evening. I got most of what I needed, and then was going to sew together part of it that really brought everything together. It was going alright at first, and I'm sure that if I'd started sewing about a week ago, it would have looked awesome, but toward the end I got very rushed and completely ruined it. I looked up, found I was 15 minutes late for the party, and decided I'd do a pared down version of the costume... then couldn't find parts that I had already assembled. Then I realized I didn't have the address written down anywhere. I tried calling, but the hosts didn't answer the phone. I think they may have been at a party. So instead I went over to my brother's apartment and we watched "It's Always Sunny in Philidelpia" and got intoxicated. Spent Sunday sleeping that off...
