The Missoula Humane Society's shelter *is* that picky. Everyone gets a background check, an inspection of their house and their daily habits (with the thought that people who work all day shouldn't have an animal), the neighbors and other personal references are called, and then a few months later someone drops by your house to see how things are going.

I might be exaggerating a tad, but that's pretty much what happened when my best friend adopted a fat and sassy little black smiley - cat last Christmas. Don't tell the shelter, but everyone works and has a busy life and yet--the cat is just fine.

I've seen the same thing FG, at adoption events at the local PetCo. I take J there on weekends sometimes to see the puppys. Too bad we both live in apartments and work more than full time...

Kelli:
Perhaps now is not the time for a pet. No sense beating your head against the Humane Society's wall if they're not going to relent on the issue, at this time. What you may want to do is set up housekeeping for the next year, see how your routine (and that of your spouse) would accommodate pets, then check back to see if there are some available. The rules might even change by then.

Okay, I have a parting shot on the d*uche bags. [Gorr, that sounds bad!] When I was growing up, it was called a "hot water bottle" and found double duty (purportedly) for soothing stomach cramps. You know, I never really had stomach cramps to the point I had to curl up with one of those rubber bags...
smiley - doh
I want to thank everyone for their inputs to the Sci-Fi Song Lyrics thread. It's been an uphill go of it, yet there have been some recommendations that I never would have remembered / thought of on my own. My hat's off to all who contribute!

Oops! My antennae are showing...

Ooh, do y'all Stateside folks remember Ray Walston and Bill Bixby in "My Favorite Martian"? At one time I ~SO~ wanted to have a set of silver antennae I could push out and retract, and do all manner of little "magic tricks."

I had one of those head thingers with two metal spiral antennae that had silver glitter-covered balls at the end. They were very popular with American kids about 20 years ago. I wish I still had it.

Deely-bobbers this side of the pond too. Still available in party shops.

I like the Andorians on Star Trek, TOS and Enterprise, their antennae are very expressive.

I think we should all wear them in aid of your efforts, Amy. *finds a pair of disco pink-and-purple deely boppers in her carpetbag and fits them over her chignon*

I like the new Andorians too - much better than the old papier-maché horns that the original series had. I think they've worked out a system for expressing emotion with those antennae - just haven't figured out what everything means yet.

Kelli, I wouldn't give up on having a dog. Some dogs are better about being alone. Small dogs, like terriers and Scotties, do well in an empty house. It's the larger, more intelligent dogs that go crazy if they're lonely. Are you determined to get one from an animal rescue center?

Hi all!

Have you tried different types of rescue facilities? In my experience, county-run ones are much less picky, seeing as their "charges" have a finite amount of hospitality to use up, and then... well, you get the idea.

Private agencies around here are much pickier, and always demand that if you find you can no longer care for the animal you've adopted, you return it to them. That's because of the aforementioned finite hospitality limit of governmental facilities... Those places make me smiley - steam
