I don't know, Phil. Maybe a little of everything you mentioned and one or two others.
Some songs stick in my head because I remember them from childhood. Some just seem to catch immediately. ("Its the year 2000, is there anybody out there, if you're from another planet, put your hands in the air..." Still others are repeated so often that you just can't help but get them stuck...

LAst one I've heard tends to stick.
However the source is interesting:
Radio
Someone else at work humming it
Someone posting a line from a song online
Me thinking about somethiong related to that song
In my head.

Woo! Eddie!!!!
"I feel so extraordinary,
Something's got a hold on me,
I get this feeling I'm in motion,
A certain sense of liberty..."
Now I've shared the song currently stuck in my head. Bwahahahaha.

I find that the songs that stick fall into two distinct categories: the ones I like immensely and the one I abhor. The ones in between those poles just don't get stuck in my head, and of course the ones that I like don't bother me.
Did Devo really do a cover of "Tomorrow"?

I don't know if Devo did it, but there was a band once that did a cover of Tomorrow. It was very disconcerting and yet somehow wonderfully pleasant to hear the song done as a cheerful punk-rock song.
Similarly, I think the same band (or another one who sounds so very, very much like the first) did a cover of Somewhere Over The Rainbow. I've never heard that one all the way through, but it was basically the same idea. And it still worked.
And on the topic of songs getting stuck in heds, I know that'll happen tonight. My jazz band practices tonight, and it's impossible to spend an hour and a half playing jazz/rock/blues tunes without getting something running through your head. My bet is that I'll either be stuck humming a fast Bebop tune, a "Gospel Rock" tune, or a classic big band number. That's generally how it goes.

That may be the band I'm thinking of, but it'll have to wait for me to get home to check. That's where I keep my CDs.

I believe that I've got a copy of it on my computer at home. Once I get hooked up, I can push you a copy.
Or I can bring one when I come hear the lectures in the lunchroom..

I want to reply to Tamberlaine and Bryce and Seth and all, but we've become a bit light-hearted here. Z, have you got notes on this conversation that you can send me?
