We have city-wide yard sales every spring. Not a good idea. There are so many families having sales that there's no one left for customers.
Seriously, it is a bad idea. Too much competition. And people see things and then don't buy because they think they may find something better down the road. And by the time they've figured out they should have picked up the item at the first place, they can't remember which house it was at!
They give free permits for the city-wide sale, so that causes people to thinkit's a great deal. Well, the regular permit is just $2.00, for Pete's sake. And they'd have a better chance of actually selling something.

Yes, well done, Toc!
And Amy, how much do you want for that coconut with the monkey face carved into it?

Garage sales are popular here in Canada, too. My parents have had a garage sale every spring for the last 25 years. It's become a tradition and also a bit of a social gathering, with lots of their friends showing up for the hot dogs and beer at noon. Any friends with stuff to sell, just bring it along and set up a table. If you wonder where my parents would come up with enough stuff to sell each year, then it might help to know that just the two of them live in a 4 bedroom, 2 storey house, with a basement, garage and garden shed and they could still use more storage space. Oh, and they have a cottage, too (including a boathouse and a workshop), similarly full of stuff.

You need a permit for a garage sale, H?! That sounds like gubment at its worst!
I like going garage sale-ing every few weeks or so because I am always on the lookout for a dining table and chairs. I don't know what kind exactly--only I'll know it when I see it. And we have a lot of those "professional" sellers too, Sporky. Places where everything looks like the price tag has been on it for years, costs way too much and the sellers won't haggle.

One needs a permit in my town, too. The municipality is obligated to extract its pound of flesh.

Shiny brilliant on the job front, Toc! What will you do to fill your time till July? And I keep meaning to ask how are you finding life so far north?
Well, it has been scorchio here today, got up to 31.3ÂșC according to the thermometer on the shaded side of the shed. At this rate we shall have to look out the electric fans to keep us cool, or join Cassie in the long grass.

Oh, don't worry Z. While it was brung up before, it is good to see if the results change in time. Likely it was before you joined us as a salonista.

Back from trompling around La Bosquita with the camera. If I post pictures of plants and flowers, would y'all have a go at helping me to identify them? I'll include ones I do know, like the agave.
There was a reason why I went home and got the camera then sped back to the lot, but I'll keep the secret till I get the pics processed and up on my website.

*about to take the test*
As for my AOL problem, the real issue is that it's not my computer. Therefore I don't feel it is my place (or my job) to download new browsers onto it. My brother says that IE got a virus on it that causes porn pop-ups. While I think this is caused by cookies he got when he was visiting porn sites, I don't like to bring this up, as I might loose my access to the only internet-attached computer in the household (we only have one line for internet, and this is it). So I'm stuck with AOL, since he got rid of IE.
Congrats, Toc! Maybe now that one of us is employed, the rest will have luck on the job front, too?
Lil, I hope you're not planning on keeping us in suspense all night...?

Sorry for the double post. I'm Liberitarian Left. It seems a popular place to be in this Salon. Specifically, I'm MORE libertarian than Ghandi, but possibly LESS communistic.
Key: Complain about this post
