I'm an English speaker (despite three years of Spanish and two of German in school) who *still* has no clue what many things are...such as past imperfect, etc.
Hypatia, I used to be rather addicted to some mysteries, but now I find that I am bored with those that are set in the same town with the same twenty characters in every book. Totally unbelieveable, that some small twee village in the hinterlands would have several murders every season without drawing massive media and law enforcement attention. Right now I am reading one of my remaining faves, Nevada Barr's latest, Flashback.

So maybe seeing the Matrix movie last night wasn't a good idea. Bone tired today. But oh well. Hindsight is 20/20.

I can't remember the swear Eric uses. That book was so short and kind of got lost up in the rest of the series.

I just had a quick look Hati, The Parrot says 'Wossname' alot, and Rincewind says 'bloody' a bit when he is getting annoyed.
In the beginning, when Eric has 'summoned' Rincewind he says 'Avaunt!' lots, I am assuming that this is some word of command?
Well the brewing seemed to go ok, but I shall have to wait and see if this batch works

*home for lunch before heading out to Ruidoso*
I don't remember the swear word either. And I barely remember going to movies.
Right now I'm reading "Krakatoa" by Simon Winchester. Waiting on the shelf is "The Devil and the White City", "The Dig Tree", and "Michaelangelo and the Pope's Ceiling" -- you can see I'm on a big nonfiction kick. Oh yeah, also open on my coffeetable is Fred Nolan's "Life and Times of John Henry Tunstall", and the book for next month's Literary Society is "Jihad vs. McWorld" by Benjamin R. Barber.

"Avaunt" is a command and means "begone".
I had a friend who was South African, who I was astonished to discover had learned English from the age of 9 onwards. He swore like a Brit, better than most Brits do. However he once said of some very annoying people "let them be less", which was such a strong turn of phrase that I have never forgotten it. I assume it is an Afrikaans/Dutch turn of phrase.
I am going to be spending a whole and delicious week with my Private Life, so will be offline a lot more, (possibly totally, if we cannot sort out modem-connectivity), so I won't be posting as much.
On an allied subject, my previous relationship was an entertaining but essentially meaningless affair, and I still get phonecalls from the guy every now and again. He knows my Private Life, but doesn't know that he *is* my Private Life, if you see what I mean. Anyways, he rang up today for a chat, and said "If you are now in a relationship we could get together and *really* have an affair!" I won't, but I am ashamed to say it amused me immensely.

It is hard to say my piece right now without terms that would get me sitebanned in an instant.
I can hardly hold back my anger at my company at the moment.

maybe it's a new jersey thing? i could be wrong. Los Angeles isn't exactly known for its diverse avian population.

Well, the wolf has again shown it's nature true.
The contributions that I make to my team have basically been ignored and I am going to be relegated to a regular chump taking cases and on the phones. So be it. They have signed their own death warrant. I will give it 45 days. If things do not change by then I will demand a reassignment or just leave. Guess it is time to hit the job hunt pavement for real.
I am just steaming with anger right now.

I don't remember any of those English tenses. I think we do use different terminology here in the US (the ones Hypatia gave), at least in grade school. I'm sure the university linguists are up on all the current terms.
sea, I assure you women here in New Jersey have the same anatomy as in California (perhaps a bit less silicone). Whatever made you think otherwise?
