For one of my broken arms (last count was four, twice each arm) the doctor had to set the fracture butt was concerned that the pain would be too much. They gave me nitrous oxide (hehehehehehe, I *like* NO2) and when I was judged suitably out of it he set the bone. I cried out at that but did not mind less than a second later. Then when they were supposed to use oxegyn to sober me up they turned the NO2 on full... It took them a few minutes to figure out why I thought that they were very funny. It is a good thing I do not use illicit NO2, because I *really* like it. Almost worth breaking another arm.... On second thought, no I hate casts.

I never did like the feeling of having an IV in my arm. When I broke the same arm later that year the feeling (not the initial break, but the way it felt while trying to get to the doctor) was uncannily similar to that of having the IV in my arm...

SPINY (aka Ship's Cook)

Yeah, G7 - I remember having that done, or should I say you've reminded me, for it was many years ago.

As was the time when at nine years old I was climbing out of the local swimming pool and a water polo player missed the pass and the ball flew out of the pool. It hit the bottom end of a 12 foot brush propped up in the corner, which fell, cartoon-like, straight onto my head. I still have a lump.

And I was told, much later in life, when I had to have a rectal examination by optical fibre camera, that I wasn't a good patient. They give you a drug which doesn't make you fully unconscious, but you don't remember anything afterwards. Then they stick the camera up your... The nurse said I shouted a lot. I still like to think I'm some sort of Proctolgy Celeb: "Hey let's get some beers and watch that video of that guy trying to run out the door with the camera still up his a**e."

I got the all clear by the way smiley - smiley

Does anyone go through childhood trauma free? I meet people who say they never broke a bone, who never split their head open, never sliced a limb, never got burned... I have done all of these. I must say that burns are among the worst injuries. While working on a racecar I burned my arm fairly badly, but it healed in an amazingly short time. It took less than two weeks to recover from a third degree burn. Oh yes, never never never reach across the manifold of a stock car motor right after it is turned off. They tend to be something near 1000 degrees farenheit.

I broke my nose when I was 11. I ran into a metal bar. Blood everywhere, but not from my nose, rather from a cut on the bridge of my nose where my glasses had smashed and cut me.
I had 2 black eyes and a jelly nose for a good couple of weeks afterwards. My dad wanted to reset it there and then, but I was so hysterical he didn't. Since then I snore smiley - sadface Plus it has a decided lean to the left. LOL

All this talk of injury and all reminds me of the halcyon days of my youth. hehehehehe I am suprised that I am still alive. Oh, by the way,my doctor had even more blood drawn for testing. I think that he is secretly a vampire. In the four visits since I started going to him, I have had blood taken three times. Is there no justice in teh world?

Bald Bloke

It sounds like I'm in good company in this thread.

My parents reckon that I had a season ticket for the local hospital when I was a kid, I was the one who had to try whatever it was that couldn't be done.
I broke both collar bones and both arms (not at the same time)

However the only permanent damage I did to myself was injuring my back, when I slipped while lifting a bucket of soil which resulted in me being in a plaster jacket for three months and still having to be careful as my back will give me grief if I over do it.

My mother was on a first name basis with the poison control centers everywhere that we lived until I left home and my brother reached his teens. Her favorite story to tell (which I do not remember at all) goes something like this:

I was about two at the time and mom had let me go outside. I was sitting next to a large oak tree, just being a happy little kid. Then mom noticed that I seemed to be eating something. She came running out the door to find me eating an acorn. Now, obviously squirrels are able to acorns, but a two year old is not a squirrel, no matter how uncanny the resemblance may be. So she called poison control in a tizzy. "My daughter just ate an acorn! Are they poisonous?" She tells of a long pause on the other end of the line. Then the young man she was talking to responded with, "No they aren't poisonous. You shouldn't be feeding your daughter acorns though."

My favorite broken bone story is my foot. I went to college in Alamosa, Colorado, one of the coldest places I have ever been in. One night after coming back to my grandparents' house from a friend's - whose heater was broken at the time - my hand slipped as I was opening the garage door. The door plummeted and landed on my foot. Fortunately, I was clod enough that my foot was completely numb, so I felt nothing until later that night when it finally thawed out. smiley - bigeyes Of course, there was nothing really to be done to help the foot heal, so the doctor told me to wear tight shoes and walk as little as possible. (This to a girl who was waiting tables at the time. smiley - winkeye) Very fun. smiley - laugh

Hey I've not broken a bone yet. I've been in hospital for a few other things though.

Marv, if you want a chat about the various blood tests, I think I've had most of them done several times over the last few months smiley - yikes Just shout and I can point out some good websites with explanations of what the tests are for.

Last time they did a blood test on me they started in my left arm. For some reason it ran dry, so they had to tap my right arm next.

You've both got me beat for blood tests, I'm sure, but I bet that I beat you both for amounts of blood taken out of the body by needle. I donate blood on a regular basis, so I know how it feels to be drained. smiley - winkeye

Used to donate blood (had a blood transfusion when I was very. very little - I was once honest!). I don't know what the situation is about me donating blood now. Must look it up.
I still have to let blood on a regular basis though, all for controlling my condition and I'd rather do a finger prick test several times a day than some of the old methods (don't ask).

Montana Redhead (now with letters)

Never broke a bone as a kid, although I had some rough run -ins with an afghan hound and a doberman and a german shepard. The afghan picked me up and shook me by my ribcage, but frankly, I only know the story because of my mother. I do remember, however, being bitten thru my right hand by a doberman, and running across the street to my mom, and she was screaming at me because there had been a car, and then because I was bleeding all over the place...my mom's not good with trauma. I, on the other hand, have handled my daughter's various accidents (the faceplant on concrete at 10 months, the cat's scratching her eyeball, her kidney disorder and subsequent blood tests, etc) with aplomb. I go into cool, calm and collected mode. It is only later, when the crisis has passed, that I freak out.
