I move that all Americans be exempted from gramar rules on the grounds that our President cannot manage standard syntax. If the leader of the nation can't speak properly, why should the public?

Morning all!
My favorite scene in Shrek - and its a small bit I think you have to be looking for, so it won't spoil anyone's enjoyment of the film - is Peter Pan turning in Tinkerbell for the bounty. Absolute brilliance, pure and simple.
I've never claimed to be able to spell well. I generally read through my posts a time or two before posting them and I still miss huge, glaring errors that I see later. However, I feel confident that my grammar is acceptable and that everyone understands me.
I do know what you mean though. I know that most folk try their hardest - especially those for whom English isn't a first language, like Munchkin and his Scottish roots * - and that makes it all the more insulting for people to have to "dumb" down entries. If someone doesn't know what a word means, they should look it up. That will not only raise their knowledge of whatever subject the entry is on, but also of the English language.
Also, I agree with Amy that someone should have basic knowledge before trying to add something to a University Project. That's why I just went a read. I've got some basic programming experience and have my books here, but I don't feel confident enough in that knowledge to contribute yet...
Its a tough line to tread there, though. After all, I don't think we really want to discourage anyone from trying to write. We just want to encourage them to do their research first. I'm not at all sure how to go about it, I fear.
Matina, some tea please.

* - Sorry, Munchers, but your dialectation (is that a word? ) was just so wonderful that I had to poke some fun. No hard feelings, I hope.

Amy, that was a typo!
Although my grammtical skills are certainly up to scratch, my keyboard skills are not so.

Sorry, OP. Hope the tube ride goes quickly for you.
Prof, I've found that a sledge works better than a crowbar for actual wall demolitions. Sounds like you are still having fun though and for that I am very happy.
Arl, I will join you in that resolution. Anyone who comes up with the term "hispanically speaking" and still leads a country should gain his people some concessions.

A typical quote: "Rarely is the question asked 'is our children learning'".
It wouldn't be so bad if I could find just one little thing to respect about the man. Unfortunately it can't even be said that he's a good father...

"I know how hard it is to put food on your family."
"I have made good decisions in the past. I have made good decisions in the future."
"Welcome to Mrs Bush and my fellow astronauts."
Something about being friendly with and part of NATO, and friendly with and part of Europe.
Mind you, I cannot spell, so I shouldn't poke fun...

And it was brought to my attention by a friend who is herself a copy editor that, while on tour, Dubya referred to "the nation of Africa." It was a continent the last time ~we~ looked. In my opinion, the selection of Dubya to run the country by the GOP and the Supreme Court represents a very cynical but true evaluation of a significant portion of the American electorate. Under-educated and hostile to intellectual display. George Will says of this group that they are given to "lloking deeply into the surface of things." Not that I like that George very much either, but a bon mot is a bon mot.
*sigh*
Meanwhile, Munchers has demonstrated that he does indeed have the ability to translate for French tour groups.

The tube ride was not fast or smooth. Trains from the station near work were only going along the wrong branch for my home station. This meant a change at a very busy station onto a very hot cowded train.
At least I'm at home now having dinner.
Engineers are good with words, technical words anyway used to confuse the issue about if their spelling and grammer are up to scratch on the rest of the language

i had a huge argument with my grandmother once on the subject of grammer. she was an english teacher, and was always correcting me when i was telling a story. so i turned it around once and said that "english is a living language and so therefore if people can understand the sentiment of whats being said then it is correct". she conceeded, in the end, but didn't talk to me for awhile. it worked from my point of view though, as she stopped correcting me.

Now that's a loaded question, OP.
Last night we went out again and found the perfect home. I mean perfect. In every conceivable meaning of the word. Its more than we wanted to spend, but we can afford it. Its big enough to accommodate all of our friends. Its got an absolutely *huge* backyard. Its got a fireplace. Its even got a hottub, for crickey's sake! Its the kind of house that I always dreamed of.
So why is it that the butterflies have started up???
I really would love to have that house. I really don't want to deal with the numbers and things that have to be done to get it though. I didn't have these problems with the other house so I'm having difficulties understanding why I have them with this one.
We're putting in an offer with a smaller earnest payment than they're asking for. This is going to be our gauge. If they take the lower payment and work with us, then we'll do everything that we can to get this house. If they ask for more, we'll go somewhere else. Right now, I just don't know which I'm hoping for at all...
Well, wish us luck. Whichever why its meant to go, it will...
