Orson Scott Card has written a wonderful series of books based on magic. They present an alternate history of 18th century America. The main character is Alvin Maker. Have any of you read them?

Yes, I've read them - or at least tried to as he seems to have stopped halfway through and gone on to other projects. I liked his alternative American world, and his way of making magical stuff fit right alongside the more mundane life. Hope he finishes it off sometime - I'm worried about the brother that turned nasty in the most recent book.
Going back to the original forum topic for a minute, I've finally got round to reading the Harry Potter books (in their nice colourful jackets not the respectably monochrome 'adult' editions) and they really are great fun! I'm converted. Indeed I rushed straight to the bookshop on the first day back from my hols becuase 'The Prisoner of Azkeban' is finally out in paperback. With the first two chapters under my belt I'm confident it'll be just as much fun as the first two.

I just had to jump in with my 2 cents. I completely agree. The series is a dead-good read! Harry Potter is the best series of books I've read in a long time. The stories are engaging and not predictable. The characters are well-developed and true to their ages - not kids pretending to be adults. It's a page turner alright. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy reading kids books but I don't care.
As for them being demonic or Satanic. What a bunch of silliness. Seems some people just need something to complain about. I grew up on fantasy and science fiction and it didn't warp me or make me want to worship the devil.
I say hooray for J.K. Rowling. Sure wish I could write a story like her.

Does anyone know why the first book is called Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in the UK but Harry Potter and the Sorceror's Stone in the US?

Mrs V Posted Apr 20, 2000
Myabe they thought the concept of a Philosphers stone too great for American kids, and sourcerers stone sounded more romantic.
I'm going to see my Boyf tommorrow, and I'm letting him borrow my copy of the third one... do what i did oh Numbered researcher, get your Boyf adicted too!!

When's she going to write the next one? If you go to Amazon they're already taking orders for "the 4th Harry Potter book" and it doesn't even have a name yet!
