Maybe something to do with low blood pressure, affecting the upper body.
Mustard on the feet warms the blood in that area. Vinegar on the head
and face increases breathing, which increases blood circulation, and releives the symptoms...........of what, I have no idea!!

None of those, no.
I nearly klaxoned "death", but decided it was too ambiguous.
The victim might well be dead after that treatement

GT goes off at a tangent, thinking laterally.
A life threatening condition....
Not specifically an illness as such....
Very old 'cure'....
Hmmmm
A deep-sea diver, suffering from 'the bends'....
is this supposed to revive him??

A cure for hallucinations, like if one starts believing he's a lettuce without a dressing?

I thought sunstroke was pretty reasonable...
But then again... who said he was ill?
In order to lure flies away from the house, and get them to buzz the poor dude for punishment?

Not punishment, no.
The poor man's not feeling his best. But it's not due to illness.
to see what the book says to do against flies.
Flypaper or rods spread with glue, though they are "gruesome and ugly", need to be used in the pantry and kitchen. In other rooms, put up small dishes of laurel oil or quassia extract mixed with sugar - which allegedly makes them fall out of the air, "but only unconscious, so they need to be swept up and thrown in the fire promptly"

No - nothing to do with four humours.
I have here the 23rd edition of the book, which came out in 1900.

Nope...
I also have a 1920s first aid manual that *doesn't* recommend this treatment. Nor does the 2005 one

I'll just recap:
It's a 19th-Century first aid treatement, though recommended by an etiquette book rather than a first-aid manual.
It's nothing to do with an allergy.
And it's not treatment for an illness.
Key: Complain about this post
