Under which circumstances is it appropriate to do this?
In a comedy show? To set up as an example for unruly children?

Following this who said buried?
Put in a hole (standing) or buried, it is not clear in the question. I was working on standing in a hole. Prehaps Mal will comment.

Is it a game? First one to squeal and climb out the hole looses?

None of those, and I didn't klaxon any of that.
Maybe you *were* better of enquiring in the other direction.
It is for his health, I'll give you that...

Not sunburn. But in a way, you're getting closer.
It sees sunburn as a cosmetic problem, like freckles.
For sunburn:
Parsley "tea" made with distilled water, left to cool, and then applied to the skin.
For the next few days, wash with water with unsweetened almond paste and benzoin resin in it.
For freckles, wear a hat to prevent them and wash children who are out in the sun a lot with a mixture of:
Borax
Rose water
Orange flower water
Acetum Plumbi (a strong solution of lead subacetate)
Benzoin resin

Is it in order to induce sweaty feet? I have a weird old book at home who claims that restricted sweating of the feet is unhealthy, and describes some remedy for it.

Not red face, no - it doesn't mention red face, just red nose, against which you should make sure your shoes are not too tight, not bend down too often, not drink Hungarian wine, and apply camphor or a milk roll soaked in milk and mixed with ground almonds at night.
Nor sweaty feet.
It does get mentioned in the same paragraph as something related to the respiratory system, for which mustard on the feet is also supposed to help, so a point for that But it's not anything respiratory.
