I feel that you really should add something to you Guide to the Earth. <I'm sorry, did that make sense?] That is - in 2003, the first on-line Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Planet was shocked <-actually we thought it quite silly] to its core,<--were we? really?], when one of its sister ,--not the way you're acting] sites launched a full scale <--i hear bombs] net war on it, proclaiming that it was rubbish. <--lies and the laying liars who tell them...]
See, this is the first shot over the bows. <--oops, you shot yourself]
http://www.bbc.co.uk/collective
is a much better site.<--says you] Nicer colours <-blue, brown, and gray look like a bowl of vomited birthday cake], better contributor ,--you call that contributing?] names <--ahem.. nicknames], a higher class of conversation <--higher than what? gorilla grunts?], more erudite, insightful <--insight into what?] and thoughtful <--wow...they've learned to think...] posts.
The other good thing about Collective is that people's screen names are much less silly <-have you ever read the hitchhiker's guide? it was the most serious thing you've ever seen, right? ddduuuuuhhhh-no that's the whole point]. than H2G2's. "Astrotomato" might be silly <--disguctingly so... you call that silly?], but compared to the half-a-page ,--minus all but a line] long names you get on H2G2, with your mentions of goblins <--we're cultured] and faerie queens <--where did you come up with that?]... well, there's no comparison, is there? <--nope, collective definitely doesn't deserve to be capitalized.]
Don't believe me?<--nope] Think I'm talking rubbish?<--yup] Come visit Collective and see for yourself.<been there, done that, it was painful, hope to never have to go back]
H2G2 - in danger of becoming just a historical guide entry in its own guide. <--so, logically, we'll exist as long as we do.] Oh dear. I'll play the trumpet <--cover your ears!!] when your archived data sources are buried. <--are you immortal or something?]

"a higher class of conversation <--higher than what? gorilla grunts?]"
I think you've summed up the conversations on h2g2 well there...

Would that they really *were* conversations, Frankie. I've seen too many threads where nobody is really connecting with anyone, so they just use smileys. I like smileys fine, but they should be used to indicate moods, not carry the whole meaning of the conversation.
But that's just my pet peeve. I grew up in the 1950s, before television became the 800-pound gorilla that made it easy for people to go through life without doing much reading or learning how to spell. I'm print-oriented, which makes me a hopeless fossil.
Anyway, there are *plenty* of H2G2 researchers who would like to see H2G2 become a better site. Hopefully, they will stay and argue their case.

What makes h2g2 great is the variety. There are plenty of "sane" discussions, peppered festively with the pun-a-thon (yes Paulie, that's directed at you. ), questions only, and many different ( extremely different actually) groups.
Contrary to what some misguided individuals believe, being erudite means being learned as well as seeking to further one's knowledge. Overt acts of snobbery as demonstrated by some not only disprove the former but also preclude the latter. Not exactly erudite, eh?

I once did a report for my science class based on a discussion that, after peer review, became the h2g2 entry on prion and prion diseases.

I bet you made a lot of cows mad with that one, Mr. Christopher.
But in truth, I'm quite serious as I go about my job. I liek to be able to let my hair down at H2G2. All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. Now I'm spouting aphorisms! How low have I sunk?

"Collective is about people exchanging views on music, film, art and the progression of pop culture. Here's how it works..."
such a limited selection of stuff to talk about... Ask H2G2 alone covers more than that. heck, even 3No.

And where's the History? The Classics? The Rules for Party Games?
Not on the collective, that's for sure!

You need a gas-mask and kevlar body armour on h2g2.
That's after you've read THE GUARDIAN and have been
versed in telepathy, sight reading and ITC training.
