So it now gets down to the fact that although your own machines (currently) are designed and made in the UK, the stuff you use to get online probably isn't.

Probably not, no.
Yet I would make sure that I do all I can to get a British made product if I myself was buying a PC or something else for myself or a friend. Sadly I do not have any influence over other people.

I've found my Speccy! The joy at seeing my first true love; my mentor; my friend through teenage angst; to whom I, Pegasus, owe it all... well, it nearly brought tears to my eyes! I even found the graphic adventure creator program to give me something to do. And the interface gizmo... somewhere to plug the modem in!
Oh, those rubber keys... oh, those shifts... OH!..... that dent!! Will it work...? *tune in next week for the next exciting installment of... 'Sinclairs from Outta...the Ark'!*
Seeing as this is the addicts forum *looks around shiftily and produces something from under coat* anyone fancy a BBC B?

If you had an amstrad, I could point you to a working tcp/ip stack... (that's the bits of software needed to speak the same language as the internet by computers)

Got a BBC B thanks, with the extra function keys too. And a cassette drive and a 5 inch floppy drive.

Can't do that - I don't have the user privileges
it is set up as THEY like it and I don't get to change
does anyone know how to get a display of the line number your cursor is on in xemacs (not emacs, xemacs)?
Alton Towers!
Phil Posted May 23, 2000
I'm sure that there'll be a config file that you can put in your home directory (there may already be there). What is the window manager that you're having trouble with?
I can't find out about your xemacs problem, but if you find something that works in emacs, then it will work in xemacs.

The tcp/ip stack mentioned for the amstrad cpc series computers can be found at http://www.nenie.org/cpcip/ It's scary what people out there are willing to do...

AEndr, The Mad Hatter Posted May 23, 2000
I don't know what window manager, but it is a scroll one (I prefer the ones that have a bar at the bottom and you click to change desks)
the trouble is, emacs automatically has the line number displayed, xemacs doesn't and we can't work out the difference

*sigh of relief*
How happy I am to have found this Conversation! To see there are others as addicted as I!
Can't stay off for more than maximum 12 hrs (I think 9 hrs is the longest so far, guess I slept late that day).
And yes - I have dreamt about Conversations, too!
Had to check next day to make sure it was just a dream...

Hello Titania, the elvish queen.
This forum seems to have died a bit recently, but I guess the people are just too busy on this here site to talk about it anymore
Still, there are much worse things to be addicted to

Quite right, Phil!
And I still feel on the safe side, especially since I DO have a RL work full-time, flamenco dancing lessons three times a week, needing 8 hrs of sleep...

Yeah and I go canoeing, swimming and I'm away a lot of weekends so I do manage to keep the addiction down to reasonable levels

I don't know. I mean - I'm still here after a year and a half. If that's not addiction, then, well, what is???

Titania (gone for lunch) Posted Sep 5, 2000
I guess there are various stages of addiction...
How about trying to specify 10 stages, 1 as the minor, 10 as the major stage of h2g2 addiction?
Any suggestions?

I don't know where the eminent Doctor Lisa's got to...
So Phil... any ideas on hooking my Amiga up to the Internet? *can't risk being suddenly h2g2-less if my PC dies again*

I'll have a think about the amiga thing. You'll need an external modem for a start.
