WEEK FOUR
GreyDesk Started conversation Jan 18, 2004
This week sees the return of the FA Cup to the selections. I think in a couple of cases it should make picking the winner really rather easy. However there is a reason for this particular combination, more of which later.
Arsenal v Middlesborough
Birmingham v Wimbledon
Man City v Spurs
Bournemouth v QPR
Sheffield Wednesday v Peterborough
Closing date 12noon on Saturday, 24th January.
Now more about this here list...
There is a player who links all five games together ie he has played for one or other of the clubs at some point in his career. In fact these five clubs span his whole professional playing career to date.
When you post up your selections, also post up who you think this player is. The first person to give me the correct name will be awarded TWO BONUS POINTS
Note - I will NOT accept answers that do not come with your match predictions.
Best of luck

Stop Press!
A slight change to the rules.
I will accept your answer to the name of the mystery player if you post it AFTER you've posted your match selections. What I won't accept is answers posted BEFORE you've posted your selections.

a bit unfair isn't it, awarding the 'first' person to answer correctly 2 points. it has been 14 hours since you posted these and i have only just been able to see it. no doubt there are others in the league who won't be able to get online until the end of the week, by which time i am sure some footy guru would have already answered correctly. just a thought cos i generally don't post til the end of the week anyway in case a player i may select gets injured, which of course due to not being able to change predictions would bugga me up a bit.
interest angle on the season though

The idea of awarding points to the first person to get the name of the mystery player correct is to encourage early posting; and also as a bit of fun. I might look into the time that I post each week's games. At the moment they tend to be immediately after I've done the previous week's results. That could change
I won't be doing a mystery player every week. If it gets a negative response after a few weeks, I'll probably drop the idea.

Arsenal 2 v 0 Middlesborough - Henry
Birmingham 3 v 0 Wimbledon - Forssell
Man City 0 v 2 Spurs - Keane
Bournemouth 1 v 3 QPR - Gallen
Sheffield Wednesday 2 v 1 Peterborough - Robins
I think Egon has the mystery player right - David Seaman - I seem to recall he started at Peterborough, moved to QPR, where he never played in the first team, then Birmingham, Arsenal, Man City.

Arsenal 4 - Boro 0 (Henry)
Birmingham 2 - Wimbledon 0 (Forsell)
Man City 3 - Spurs 2 (Anelka)
Bourenmouth 0 - QPR 2 (Gallen)
Sheffield Wednesday 2 - Peterborough 1 (Robins)
I have no idea, so I'm going to say that I have played for at least five of these clubs. I made my debut for spurs and racked up over 100 games only to be sold to Arsenal for a then record tansfer fee. I had an up and down time with the Gunners and found myself caught up in off-feild affairs.Arsensal released me on a free transfer and i eventually signed with Birmington. That season i scored regually and my season tally reached 32 goals in all comps. I stayed with the blues for three seasons until a falling out with the manager saw me riding the bench, then the bus to QPR. Here is where i made my mark and played 296 consecutive matches before a serious knee injury resulting in and 2 year absence. I would have one last horah at Peterborough, but as most comebacks do I failed to make an impact and retired at the end of that season.

Sounds convincing to me. Are you predicting a career path for Sol Campbell perhaps?

Birmingham 4-0 Wimbledon (Morrison)
Manchester City 1-1 Tottenham (Keane)
Bournemouth 0-2 QPR (Rowlands)
Sheffield Wed. 2-0 Peterborough (Robins)
The mystery player is indeed David Seaman - who, amazingly, appears to have completed an apprenticeship at Leeds United without turning into a racist, a criminal or a greedy . Maybe things were different there in those days?
