Ah, but that is why it is quite so cunning: because when we shout it, our enemies go "Wait, do they mean that their socks aren't scared of hell? Do they mean that we're going to hell? Just what exactly do they mea- "
Wow. Either that's quite a big coincidence, or there are quite a lot of people who are 1/16 Scottish worldwide .

Yup, it's only slightly less dishonourable than hitting them while they're down.
True, but we are from quite diverse geographical locations... aren't we? I mean, what are the chances, this being an internet forum and all, that we would all be precisely 1/16 Scottish?

But in a good course
I'm not sure how spread we are to be honest, it's not uncommon to be part Scottish withing the UK though.

That's true, that's true. But 1/16? A little bit Scottish, that wouldn't surprise me it's true, and if you stopped random people on the street, I'd expect that a fair few of them would be a bit Scottish, of which some would be 1/16. But the fact is that this is h2g2 and we coincidentally managed to all be 1/16 Scottish. That just strikes me as odd, though it may be a statistical fallacy that it's unlikely.

I'm still recovering from the fact that Opti turned out to live next door to my grandmother's old house.

Wow....
I suppose it is possible that there's a connecting factor. In a given geographical area of the country, people are more likely to be 1/16 Scottish... plus we are all roughly similar in age, aren't we? Which explains why we're so low. ANd we all have computers, which probably shows something or other.

Not only ancient but uncertain as to exactly what proportion of Scottish blood he has. A sixteenth is a guess based on when the paternal side of the family is supposed to have moved to Newcastle from Scotland. Its going to be inaccurate cos if you come from the Borders like we did there will have been intermarriege for centuries.

Unless you grew up somewhere remote and rural like the Highlands chances are you're a mixture. South Wales is full of people who consider themselves Welsh descended from Irish people who came here when coal was king.

I'm boringly WAS, as far as I know. There's that little bit of Scottishness, but apart from that, I seem to be the sort of person the BNP are always harking on about .

But how far can you trace back?
My family moved from Scotland to England a few generations back but the surnames Germanic, theres supposed to be gypsy blood on my maternal side, and god knows what sort of mixture over the last 1000 years or so. Racial purity is a myth.

To Wedgewood, on my father's side. Not sure about the other side though.
