I can't follow the links right now, anhaga, but the kidnapping of a man's family in order to get to him - isn't that something only *bad* regimes do?

'Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Massachusetts, and other Democrats on the committee reminded Rumsfeld that in September 2002 he said "we know" where weapons of mass destruction are stored in Iraq.
Explaining that remark, Rumsfeld told the panel that he was referring to suspected weapons sites, but he acknowledged that he had made it sound like he was talking about actual weapons.
The remark "probably turned out not to be what one would have preferred, in retrospect," he said.'
And, now Rumsfeld clutches at the straw that broke the camel's back:
'Rumsfeld also said he saw a possibility that Iraq managed to hide some banned weapons of mass destruction. He said that it took 10 months to find Saddam Hussein and that the hole in which he was found on December 13 "was big enough to hold biological weapons to kill thousands" of people.'

I'm now going to go off for a bit of rum in tribute.

anhaga, this was the one that scared me:

Instinctually, I knew the Patriot Act was a bad idea, but I had no concept of the scope....
Can I move to Canada now, please?

Well, then, can I bring my school? I mean, that's what's holding me back, really.

I saw part of it on C-span...the sickening part was watching the chairman talk to Rumsfeld..."ooh, is there anything we can do to help? We'd really like to pass any legislation you need? Isn't there anything at all you need?"
Later, there was a nice staged conversation between 2 democratic senators, one asking the other "why hasn't the bush admin included the war in Iraq in the budget? They know it's going to cost money; they know we are going to approve it; why lie?"

It looks like fear and racial profiling is a trait of those policy-makers who think the Patriot Act is a good idea. I knew that we're having problems here in the States with the loss of freedom and the heightened paranoia, but I had no idea it was infecting the government across the pond.

Been happening covertly for a couple of decades now you only have to delve into "GOV" acts and records over the last couple of decades to see "why and how" todays thinking for example

found that a long time ago!

this has some interesting links but you need to go back a couple of sessions of parlement to get the full picture with regard to some of the policys.

Look out Tony!
'I'm not just going to leave him in power and trust a madman," Bush said in an interview for NBC's "Meet the Press."'
Or is Bush resigning?
