H2G2 Presidential Meet
Created | Updated Jun 25, 2006
That old saw about all men being created equal is stuff and nonsense. If you don't believe it, then try being an h2g2 researcher living across the Atlantic from Ye Olde London pub and having to read twice a year about the wonderful time had by all at yet another London Meet. Seeing photos of all those smiling, slightly inebriated faces is enough to make a Hillbilly cry.
It has been clear for some time that there needs to be a meet in the United States. And this meet needs to be entertaining enough that photos from it will make everyone not attending green with envy. Hypatia, in her role as President of h2g2, has set about to create just such an event.
You are invited to attend the Great Presidential Meet of 2006 to be held on July 3 and 4 in Webb City, Missouri, USA. Come early and stay late.
Where is Webb City and why hold a meet there?
Holding a meet in Webb City actually makes sense. First, it is near the geographic center of the country. This doesn't put any one group of researchers at a greater disadvantage than any other group. Let's face it, the United States is a big place. There isn't any location for a general meet that is going to be convenient. Everyone who attends is going to have to make an heroic effort to get there.
Second, Webb City is easy to find. It is located in Southwest Missouri on old Route 66. Webb City is also on US Hwy 71, which is a major highway running north and south and is just north of Interstate 44, which runs east and west. If you can't find Webb City on the map, then look for Joplin. Webb City is on the north side of Joplin.
Third, Hypatia lives in Webb City, she is doing the cooking, and as the President she can hold the meet any place she wants.
Why have the meet on a holiday? Is Hyp crazy?
The short answer to that is “yes”. But that has nothing to do with the selection of Independence Day as the date for the meet. It all started last July 5 with a journal entry concerning Hyp's family's Fourth of July picnics. Hillbilly Fourth
Having the meet on July Fourth gives us an excuse to shoot fireworks. Do the London meets have fireworks? Didn’t think so.
This is probably a good time to mention, since some British subjects will be in attendance, that Missouri was not part of the War for Independence, Hypatia’s ancestors were all safely tucked way in Old Blighty at the time, and she had absolutely nothing to do with any of it.
What are we going to do at the meet?
So glad you asked. The official kickoff for the meet will take place on the evening of July 3rd with a picnic at Hyp's. Then after dark we will all make the short drive to the Devil's Promenade, which is the home of one of the most famous ghost lights in the US. With luck we'll be able to see the famous Spook Light.
July 4th activities will begin with a leisurely brunch served by your President from 10:00 - 1:00, after which she will give everyone a guided tour of her library and open the computer lab for those of you who need an Internet fix. If there is enough water in the river, a swimming party is planned for the rest of the afternoon. If there isn't enough water, an alternative activity will be arranged. Around suppertime everyone will head over to Hyp's cousin's house for her traditional family Independence Day cookout and fireworks.

Information concerning accommodations will be available nearer the meet. Hypatia is going to reserve a block of rooms at a local motel once she knows how many are coming.
There is still plenty of time to arrange your schedules so you can attend. Hope to see you in July in Missouri.
