Rains - Wondering where time's going and why it's in so much of a hurry! Posted Nov 10, 2005
Not sure where this would go... not done this collaborative stuff before! Maybe PR is a start? *wanders off to check the other entries in PR*
Pinniped, are you sure the town of Scunthorpe *is* blameless?
Has anyone mentioned Roche Abbey, near Maltby? A Cistercian abbey founded in 1147, and lasted till Henry VIII came along and dissolved it in 1538. And a lot of it was hidden and demolished during the 18th Century when the landowner (Lord Scarborough, who owned the neighbouring bits of land) paid Capability Brown to landscape the area - only re-emerging during the 1920s after some archaeological excavations. Now I think it's owned by English Heritage.
Could be worth mentioning as a place to visit.

Well, maybe not entirely blameless.
But Scunny isn't corrupt enough to deserve that, surely?
Personally speaking, I wouldn't accuse Sodom and Gomorrah of spawning the Chuckle Brothers.

I'm going to regret posting this, but what the hey...
So proud are the Chuckle Brothers of their origins, that one of their recent stage tours was a show called 'Pirates of the River Rother'.
Look - I saw it on a poster outside the Oxford New Theatre, but I didn't inhale...
I keep feeling I should contribute something about Sheffield to this thread, it being the place of my birth and all, but everything I know is covered in the Edited Sheffield Entry (A673472) anway...
Nice work, Jules

Whether you submit this to the new Edited Guide Writing Workshop or to PR is entirely up to you! If you think that the article could do with a longer gestation period, then possibly the WW might be best - if you think you've made a pretty good stab at the article and that it probably only needs some final amendments and additions, then PR is probably best. *Most* of the county entries have gone straight from Challenge h2g2 into PR - in fact, some are already out with our SubEditors and may be finding their way onto the front page in the very near future!

Even though I'm from Rotherham, I've never actually watched a whole episode of the Chuckle Brothers - I usually have to change channel before I get a desire to break the TV . Still, in my opinion I'd rather them than the Tellytubbies!
I remember seeing the adverts for that Pirates tour, too *shudder*.
