A Conversation for South Yorkshire, England, UK
UK Counties & Regions - England - South Yorkshire

One of the major industrial regions of the country, South Yorkshire contains the city of Sheffield as well as a wide range of towns like Doncaster, Barnsley and Rotherham. It's also blessed with a turbulent and action-packed history that's reflected in its wide range of castles - some still standing, some ruined. But what are the other key selling points to South Yorkshire? What sights would you show to a visitor? Contribute to this entry, go on!

Hurrah! Well done, JulesK!
Anyone else with any knowledge of this area want to chip in a few suggestions of things to include? The more the merrier...!

As soon as I think of something nice to say about Doncaster, I'll be right with you.

Rotherham - usually the highest teenage birth rate in the UK in the stats. (Me born there )
Seriously, there's loads of stuff and I will be on to it asap

I don't think Jim Lynn's databases are big enough.

When I was working in Yorkshire, someone told me Mexborough was the worst place in the UK. I never went there to confirm it though.
Can I be the first to mention that those comic geniuses Paul and Barry Elliott - better known as the Chuckle Brothers - hail from Rotherham, and are staunch Rotherham United fans?

You can.
Also Paul Shane (Hi-de-Hi) William Hague I believe (although hard to believe)and Jive Bunny. All Rotherham.
Dunno about the Mexborough thing, can think of worse places.
I'll bet you're taking on a few of these, eh, Six, with your widely publicised geographical interest?!

Oh yes, I forgot:
Paully, can I please do this one as well? That's it then, just the two. Will be more than enough, don't want to promise stuff I can't deliver.

I'm only taking on Staffordshire, where I'm from... for everywhere else, I'm just chipping in with quirky bits of useless info.
I have to say, this whole thing has got me contributing 'usefully' to h2g2 for the first time in ages.

Yes, I was going through a bit of a barren patch, EG-Entry wise (only write anything when really interested in it), so this project was a useful thing to put my mind to.

Excellent stuff! Looking forward to reading your final entry on lovely South Yorkshire (even if it *is* the wrong side of the Pennines!)

I'm delighted to announce that we already have two County entries in Peer Review, waiting to receive any bouquets or brickbats that people might lob in their general direction! If you're currently either working on or contributing to a County entry of your own right now, you might like to have a quick look to see how some other researchers have tackled this challenge. They are: County Fermanagh (A6092606) and Norfolk (A6108473).
Hope you enjoy reading them!

Seriously, isn't it spam that I'm having to read this a dozen times or so for the threads I'm still subscribed to?

It is a bit annoying though, when you have to plough through two pages of conversations with new posts, only to find out it's all the same post... if we did it we'd get shouted at
