UK Counties & Regions - England - South Yorkshire
JulesK Posted Nov 2, 2005
I am still doing this, honestly, I have been bogged down in RL issues recently.
Anyone who wishes to add more info to this thread, please do, I will get it in there somehow!
If anyone can tell me which counties they think border South Yorks, do speak up. I've got a feeling I'm going to miss one out so a second opinion would be great

Rains - Wondering where time's going and why it's in so much of a hurry! Posted Nov 3, 2005
As far as I know, the counties that border it are:
Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, West Yorkshire, and I think whatever Humberside is calling itself these days. I've been trying to look on the Ordnance Survey website to confirm, but haven't had much luck .
Oh, and ex-England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman is another Rotherham chap.
Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame used to write for the Rotherham Advertiser, and I believe he's originally from Doncaster. And Doncaster was originally founded by the Romans (which I'll try and look into!).

There's a little bit of North Yorkshire that borders South Yorkshire. It's along near the M62 as you approach M18 interchange.

That's what used to be RAF Finningley, isn't it? The runway there's big enough to land those Antonovs on (the really huge Russian cargo plane that's the biggest plane in the world... can't remember its exact designation!).

Conisbrough Castle is also used as a setting in Sir Walter Scott's novel Ivanhoe, and is one of the best preserved Norman keeps in England.

Doncaster began when the Romans built a fort in the area about 71 AD. The Romans called the fort Danum.
Doncaster gained a grammar school in 1575.
Doncaster suffered an outbreak of typhoid in 1700.
Doncaster is famous for horse racing. The St Ledger was first held in 1776. Royality always used to visit during the St leger, there is a story however that King Gorge the V was snubbed in some way and no Royal has been back since, how true this is I don't know.
There is a village in Doncaster called Tickhill this used to be a leper colony (it's an exclusive area now who'd have believed it!)
in the 20th century Doncaster became known for its butterscotch

I just read Post#9, and rushed off to check the birthplace of the Chuckle Brothers. Number six is right - they're from Rotherham!
A weight has been lifted from me, and from the blameless town of Scunthorpe.
I think I need to visit the Update Forum about this : A806023
I will naturally be taking legal action against Master B for this monstrous slander...
(btw - Jules, whatever you want on Steel City, just ask)

That's spooky, Cal, I've just been doing the bit on Donny and mentioned the Roman name and the racing!
Thanks, Pin, your name already appears in my 'to do ' list as I'm planning to link to a couple of your Entries

The race also attracted royalty in the early 20th century when King Edward VII attended from 1903 through to 1909.
^^^^^^^^^^
Thats the only bit I could find on royalty attending the St leger

Right, I think I am ready to put this one into the public domain. Do people want to see it in rough first or shall I fling it into PR and start crossing my fingers?

The Writing Workshop is presumably the place for it?

I don't know, I've been trying to find out from the original threads which Paully started. I know that a couple of them have already gone into PR as he's flagged them up in each of the other threads to give the rest of us a nudgeso maybe they are supposed to go in there?
I'd be happy either way, I'm expecting people to want to check/alter/add stuff.
Jules
