Watch and learn:
D A D A M S Taking A=1, B=2, Z=26
4 1 4 1 13 19
and... 4+1+4+1+13+19 = 42

No the true reason is...
In the good old days of OS prompts one could get onself into great trouble with the indescrimanate use of * e.g. the command del *.*
could totally ruin your day. The * is a computers total universe. What is the ASCII code for * - you guessed it - 42.

42, hmm. I thought it was obvious. Then again, I'm sitting here thinking that if it is that obvious then I wouldn't be sitting here wondering what it is. Anyway, the answer. Or to be exact the question. 42 is the number of actual people on earth, the other few billion are just fooling themselves.
That's not what I heard!
Artretia Dent Posted May 25, 1999
I heard it was found by Mr.Adams by using a computor in a university. Apparently he typed in "Life, the universe and everything", pressed enter and, hey presto, the number 42 appeared on the screen.
Co-incidentally some astrolgical physicist research people were looking for something or oters in space, and they found there were 42 types of it. Can't remember what they were looking for now.
Research people
MrLemming, Researcher 12594 Posted May 25, 1999
I suspect it was the total number of people in the universe who actually knew and believed that
DNA just picked a random number. Which just happened to be 42.
Just like a lot of other stuff, apparently...
beer
marvthegrate LtG KEA Posted May 28, 1999
Truly it is the number of beers one must drink to lie out in a field and comtemplet that which has changed our very being.
Where many minds can get together and delve in to the possibilities of the universe. Or just have fun getting drunk..

Fluke Posted Jun 7, 1999
Sometimes I get called uncanny, occasionally unusual, once someone called me weird, but I've never been called strange.
Sorry, can't help you.

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Jun 7, 1999
If I call you strange will you help him then.
'you are strange'
There you go.
BTW. I thought that 42 was the mumber of times you were allowed to through a double before something terrible happened

Smiley Ben Posted Jun 8, 1999
I doubt it's the mumber of times to do anything?
If so where would the memble berries put the disectors?

Swiv (decrepit postgrad) Posted Jun 8, 1999

i suppose they would put useless things where everyone else puts them,
under the bed or up in the roof
