Great work! I don't usually respond to these things but in this case I think you deserve it. I mean this is just fantastic, all the lyrics to the Galaxy Song. I've been looking for those for ages. It's a pity about all that science getting in the way though.

great work, danny! that's the song from the organ donor sketch, isn't it? (it would never do for my mum to watch that bit - she'd tear up my donor card in a trice )

Thanks, guys
Yes, it is the song from the organ donor sketch, with Eric Idle emerging from the fridge wearing a a pink tuxedo
And my mum has a bit of a thing about organ donation as well...

It's great! D'you know, this song always reminds me of the Total Perspective Vortex on Frogstar World B from the Restaurant at the end of the Universe.

Great article, but I need to point something out:
/ PEDANT
nuclear power doesn't owe anything to the sun. The energy comes from splitting heavy atoms such as uranium that were forged in supernovae (and possibly the big bang IIRC) before the solar system even formed.

Yes... but (he says, thinking rapidly) the fact that those radioactive elements ended up as part of the Earth is due to the process of formation of the planets of the solar system, in which the sun was heavily involved. Or something...

I didn't know that the lyrics had too much to do with actual measurements! I thought they were just as they are as they sound good...

Thanks for everyone's kind comments
Justin - never underestimate Eric Idle (or any Python, for that matter)!

Please, Please can anyone tell me where i can get this song?
Its always been a favorite, love to get a copy!
BTW Uranium would not have been formed during the big bang, as conditions were not stable enough for even light atoms to form for a while. But otherwise good point about nuclear energy.

The song is available on the Meaning of Life soundtrack, and also on the albums "Monty Python Sings" and "The Ultimate Monty Python Rip Off". You can probably get these from places such as Amazon.

Excellent a noble addition to the dissection of lyrics here on h2g2.
