The radius of the galactic bulge is estimated as between 10 and 30 thousand light years. This means Eric's 16,000 is a reasonable estimate. The thickness of our area of the galaxy is estimated at 1-10 thousand light years.

Hi Pete 
Is there a 'definitive' reference for that value? When I Google for galactic bulge radius, I come up with several different numbers, such as 0.3-3 kPc, 1.5 kPc, 6000 light years... 
If so, I'm happy to change the Entry
