The Proncess Bride (again)
Zebedee (still Pool God after all these years) Posted Nov 25, 1999
Sorry SM, wasn't having a go - and your reason to include it pretty much echoes my own opinion of the film (I'm a big believer in everypne's right to an opinion). I just think that BWP wins the prize for "The Most Over-Hyped Pile Of Shite That Has The Temerity To Waste Two Hours Of My Life That I've Ever Seen" Award. I mean Ep 1 was over-hyped, but it was still enjoyable (well, if you're a bit obsessed with lightsabers and stuff).
BWP on the other hand was seriously over-hyped, mostly by American Film Critics who thought "My God, you can make a huge profit on a movie without spending 200 million dollars making it! It must be brilliant!", a line that critics in the UK lapped up for the two usual reasons:
1) They hadn't seen it
2) None of them have the guts to disagree with popular opinion, however misguided it may be.
I spent the whole film waiting to be even remotely frightened (OK, one slightly nervy scene where they all sprint through the dark in their underwear), and began getting a little bored when every horror cliche ever thought of was used. Half an hour after I said to my mate - "I bet they end up going in circles" - I sort of wasn't surprised when they did. And then I really looked forward to them all getting killed, so I could go and do something else. I just wish they hadn't lingered for so long. Any old fool with a camcorder, 16:9 and some decent sound equipment could do a better job than that - and I know because it's my business.
Most terrifying film ever? My arse.

I watched the Blair Witch Project all the way through. Was it because it was terribly scary? No. Was it because it was captivating? No. Was it because I'd paid to see it and I was going to damn well get my money's worth? Er, no actually, I didn't think of that. Is it because I wanted to get perverse pleasure out of guessing each new 'plot' turn? Nope.
Why then did I see the whole turgid thing? Mostly because everyone had said how terrifying it was and how they'd wet their pants at the ending, and I didn't want to seem a wuss. I suspect that this explains why everyone went to see it - they'd been told it was the scariest thing ever and they didn't want to look chicken. Maybe the critics didn't want to look scared either. Or they saw a different film. Either way I still think that it sucks.

Hey Zebedee - "Most terrifying film ever, MY ARSE."
Where's that showing then? It sounds pretty scary to me.

Mrs V Posted Nov 25, 1999
I haven't seen it, don't even think its come to norway yet, and quite frankly, don't intend to. No on the Subject of princess bride, Robin Hood men in Tights Etc.... Isn't taht man just the sexiest in the world?? It must be that he has a proper English accent. or something!

Zebedee (still Pool God after all these years) Posted Nov 25, 1999
Sorry, which man would that be. I have an English accent, and some on H2G2 can attest to my qualities, but I don't remember being in those films - Oh Cary Elwes wasn't it. I don't think he's from over here, so maybe we've finally found a Yank who can do the accent convincingly....
And My Arse? It can be seen quite regularly (though not touched) if people buy me enough drinks.

Mrs V Posted Nov 25, 1999
Hmm, could this be Ask h2g2 is Cary Elwes a brit? If he isn't he's darn talented, though that Gwynneth Paltrow doesn't do so bad a job, Or Mike Myers.

Men in tights has to be the greatest film in the world!
And I have an english accent. That's because, like lots of other people, I'm english!
BWP v Fight Club
Bluebottle Posted Nov 25, 1999
And unlike the BWP. Thinking about it, the scariest thing in the BWP was how much attention it got for doing so little. Very dull, I thought...
"Fight Club" - now THERE's an exciting film!

Ah, but the cry havok line wasn't the quotable. The "I'd give real money.." line was. (I'm not sure if shakespeare wrote that) However, Cry Havok is a great quote anyway.
Clint Eastwood

Ah, but if you go into flash gordon territory you must also realise one of Brian Blessed's favorites.
(Shouted, that goes without saying) "GORDON'S ALIVE"
and just to add in a couple of greats from Star Wars
Darth "Don't call me Palpy" Sidious: Wipe them Out, All of them
and that great scene at the end of ESB
Vader "Obi-wan never told you what happened to your father..." Continue as much as you can remember.
Talking of that scene, Has anyone thought to do a "Most parodised movies/movie scenes"?

"There, I've touched it!" - Gene Wilder after slapping his lunch when being told he hasn't touched his food.
"Cool, calm and logical" - Marty Feldman aside on Wilder freaking out after saying he would be "calm and logical"
"If you build it , they will come" - one of the classic lines of all time from Field of Dreams
"Peace, Love, Dope!" - James Earl Jones about to cream Costner with a baseball bat in Field of Dreams
"ALLRIGHHTY THEN!" - you know who from Ace Ventura
"Oh, LLLLLAAAAAAAADDDDEEEEEEEE ! " Jerry Lewis from The Errand Boy
"Zip and I'm Gone" Jerry Lewis as The Nutty Professor
Star Wars
Hoop the Mottle Posted Nov 26, 1999
Speaking of Star Wars :
"I have a bad feeling about this"
and did anyone notice the annoying Jar Jar remarking "how rude!" when rebuffed? A C3PO line.
The Proncess Bride (again)
Lupa Mirabilis, Serious Inquisitor Posted Nov 26, 1999
Agreed. I too spent the whole movie waiting to be the least bit scared, and was completely let down. And on top of that, I came out of it with a splitting headache.

Ohhhhhhhh yes... I think it's not just the accent, but the voice itself. Only he could make "you warthog-faced buffoon" sound almost like a compliment.
