I can already hear everyone screaming "Why the has he added Salt Lake City to the trip, it's in Utah for Bobs sake!", and the reason is quite simple - the brother of my travelling companion is currently living and wo*king in SLC.

This is, of course, a far more structured trip than I would like, so be prepared for details to change as we go along.

Looks like you must be flying everywhere... Otherwise I'd point out that Sacramento might be on *a* route between LA and Salt Lake City... Then I'd go dig out the atlas to see if it's true I do know one h2g2er in SLC--Marv the Great

SLC to Vegas may well be a drive, if Peters brother decides to come with us. It'll be mostly flying, but we may do the New York, Washington, Charlotte part of things by train if we think it will be interesting...

I think we'll have a better chance of getting together for a chat and a jam during the few days we'll be in San Francisco, Amy.

Flexibility is *always* a good thing. Heck, the map I have says it's *only* about a 12 hour drive from SLC to Sacremento, so if I get bored in SLC I'll just jump in a car and, *bingo*, Sacremento here I come!

Hmm.. You know, I have been meaning to visit Amy as well. I am unsure what my job situation will be in May, but perhaps a little h2g2 mini-meet might be in order.

You have WAY too many days allowed for Las Vegas (36 hours tops and you'll be ready to move on!). And then you need to deduct a few days from Charlotte, and why-the-BOB are you spending so much time in Honolulu??? You already live on an island for Bob's sake! You need to add more time to San Francisco so that we have time to get together when I fly out there!

Not that it's all about me of course. I mean I do realize that this is YOUR trip.

Well, actually it is all about me now that I think about it!

No, it's all about me, as there are clearly 2 different times during which ER can come and be bored by my dragging out all my artwork... Did I say that out loud?

Michele, when will you be in San Fran, and will you be there long enough to pop over and visit maybe? I could even find BART's website and see if it does come inland a couple hours...

ER, you're going to be *exhausted* by the time you hit NY!

I'd advise against the NY to Washington, DC train. It's mind-numbingly boring, as the line goes through residential areas, so they've put up lots of trees, walls, etc. to block the noise. So you get to spend hours staring at blurry green things. It's less than an hour flight, though.

"You have WAY too many days allowed for Las Vegas" - We'll be looking to do a trip to see "The Huge Pothole" (a.k.a. The Grand Canyon) while we're in the area.

"And then you need to deduct a few days from Charlotte" - That would be terribly upsetting to the friends we'll be visiting there.

"ER, you're going to be *exhausted* by the time you hit NY" - we have allowed for the possibility of having a few days rest somewhere along the way. Most probably in Charlotte.

"and why-the-BOB are you spending so much time in Honolulu???" - Women in bikinis. You underestimate just how lazy we are!!! After 5 weeks of flat-out travelling, we will be ready to just laze on a beach and do nothing for a few days before returning home. More importantly, we'll be trying to book a hotel which has a "swim-up-bar". But this can be reduced by a day or two if we want to.

We'll have to see about taking a few days off w**k while you're in the NY area. There are some "touristy" things TJ's wanted to do, and it would be a perfect time for that ferry trip to the Statue of Liberty! And since you'll be here for the start of summer, it should also be a great time of year for a trip to the top of the Empire State Building! Not to mention clam chowder on the beach!

I'm also talking to Clive about when he intends to travel to the US. So the whole Charlotte/Washington/New York part of the trip might get re-organised so that I have the opportunity to meet Our Esteemed Warlord and Amy.

Maybe we can see if they can visit Noo Yawk at the same time. Save you a step!

Do you like New England or Manhattan clam chowder? I'm a New England fan, personally ...

I've never had clam chowder, but it sounds seafood-ish so it must be good!
