a=131, b=151 &skip=130, &show=21 Link to SERVICE is http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/alabaster/F1813449?thread=420387&skip=130&show=21 If yours didn't work, you may have been cutting and pasting the incomplete link from my posting. Use the full link text - the middle bit should read " alabaster/F1813449?thread=420387 " Icy

You're just not taking this seriously, are you?

Now if we apply partial differentiation to the URL, it can also predict Telegram winners, as well as last week's lottery numbers.

Ya know Icy, I'm a bit technically challenged and I don't think I'm gonna try and do this right now as part of posting the new word. If you want to do it you could. I would suggest that you put the link right in the voting thread. Would others like that? smiley - biggrin

Well I suggested it as it would be convenient to post it at the time you post the new word. (I might not be around when you do).

Cheers anyway,

How about I ask Telegram Sam to set up a new thread which will list where each word can be found (using Icy's superb technical skills). Then people can go to that thread and will have an index of where things are.

Would you be willing to do that Icy?

Hi Vestboy, I was trying to highlight a little-used feature of H2G2 where we can create links which reference a section of postings in a thread. This seemed to be a very good example of where to use it. I don't believe it's that difficult to do - it's just a little simple arithmetic along with some cutting and pasting of the URL address from your browser. I'm sure you could knock one up in 30 seconds, although Lil might need to sober up a little first. I believe that it would be most useful when a new word is posted, as people would be able (in a single click) to display the previous week's telegram entries for judging. As you suggest, it could also be useful in other areas (roll of honour page, etc), and I will be happy to provide anyone with these links if they are unable to get them to work. I may not be around each Friday to post them on the words thread, though. I could create some retrospective links here or anywhere if you wish. Remember that owing to an odd feature with this board these are abbreviated in the middle when they appear in postings. The links work, but they can't be subsequently cut and pasted elsewhere (without filling in the missing bit in the middle). Now a better place to put them as "index" links would be on your Telegram home page. If you use GuideML, then you would add the link in this format:

Click the link to see the entries for the word SERVICE.

Note (1) the middle bit of the URL is missing in the above example - you will need to complete this in the GuideML source using the characters "alabaster/F1813449?thread=420387". Note (2) in GuideML you must type <&> instead of <&>, as this is a reserved character) Hope this makes sense. Let me know if it doesn't. Cheers, Icy

Of course, Lil.

Indeed I should have recognised that your comments related to the apparently idiosyncratic truncation of user resource locations on the proprietary software utilised by the DNA bulletin board, and were in no way attributable to a loss of sensory perception caused by over-generous consumption of alcoholic beverages.

Cheers (if that's the right word), Icy smiley - snowball

Icy, Icy, Icy. What you find simple I marvel at!
I will get a new thread started which I will call the Telegram Index. I will then rely on you to place the words and their links there. We won't worry too much about when you do it so long as you can do it at some time.
How about that? Would you be willing to do it?
If you say yes I will create the thread.

Hi Vestboy,

I'm going to hold off saying yes for the moment, as you're suggesting what I believe is the third-best solution.

The second best would be a new page (you can keep full control over a page, but you can't with a thread), using links in the format I posted earlier. This should be created and owned by the main Telegram owner (Telegram Sam?) I believe you can add links in plain-text mode, but you can make them look a lot neater in GuideML, which of course requires someone with a small smattering of GuideML knowledge, and maybe nobody has this. I would be happy to compile a sample GuideML page and send the source text to an e-mail address of your choice, for you to create (and subsequently maintain - not difficult). Alternatively you could add the links to your roll-of-honour page (Does this use GuideML?)

The best solution would be to derive and post the link below the new word on Fridays. This requires the Friday poster to have knowledge of a little arithmetic, and a little cut-and-paste skill.

Have a think about it, and let me know. The only thing I can't do is guarantee I'll be around to keep things up to date, sorry.

I understand your reticence at making a commitment. The benefit of having it in a thread is that if the person initially committed cannot keep the thing updated someone else may be able to without the need to give them full access to the main page.

That's why the stuff is in threads mainly - anyone can have access to it and generally people respect the purpose of the threads and are considerate to one another.

I do see what you mean about the other benefits of your suggestions but I think that sharing the work out is probably better than causing existing supporters to have to do more. Sometimes people are at full stretch to do the small tasks they take on.

The reason I'm reticent is that I expect my employer to bar this site, as they have done with all other messageboards I used to contribute to! Just don't want to let anyone down, that's all.

p.s. enjoyed your "PROCEED" telegrams earlier.
