During the last days of my active working career, I usually used the first workinhg day after my monthly weekend off commuting 350 - 400 miles one way back to work.

I made a point of living almost close enough to walk to work. I still drive most of the time, but in an emergency I could easily get form home to work or vice versa.

If the nine stalls are all in a row, side by side, they'll be bounded by ten walls or rails between them, including the two on the ends, so if you either tether the horse to them or have them straddle the rails, that might do it.
