I've got a new job
PedanticBarSteward Posted Sep 16, 2008
I was amazed to look at h2g2 yesterday evening and see that Bel's getting another job had elicited over fifty responses in the course of the day!!
People have obviously got their priorities right!!
Anyway, allow me to add to the list of congratulations and pleas that it does not distract you from (for us) FAR more important duties (scrabble, editing the post etc).
It reminded me of when (one of the times) I got throown out of school of architecture, leaving me in debt and at a loss as to what to do. I went home - very much 'tail between my legs' to be met by my dear papa's, "Well, you'd better get a job then - you're not free-loading here!'
I did - an finding the 'atmosphere' at home a little tense, I got several.
1. A papaer round in Stratford-upon-Avon starting at 5:00 am, meaning that I had to get up at 4:00 to walk the three miles into town (no - I didn't have a bicycle).
2. As office boy in an architects office, 9-to-5, where I sharpened the pencils, did the prints and made the coffee - although they did teach me to trace, as well as all sorts of essential things, such as just how annoying can be to empty the contents of the pencil sharpener into someone's (that you don't like) pocket.
3. At 5:30pm I went to clean a butchers shop, the worst part of which was scrubbing the wooden chopping block.
4. At 7:00pm I went to a small French restaurant where I was the 'plongeur' but also cleaned all the vegetables and helped make salads.
On a good day, I left at 11:30pm and walked home.
At weekends, I was still expected to mow the rectory lawns (about an acre) as well as the churchyard!
I stood this for a year - somehow - and looking back, I don't think that it did me any herm at all.

Thanks, PBS.
I've never had that many jobs, and I think I'd be a bit too old now to work so many hours.
However, in the course of my life I've had quite a variety of jobs, and they certainly didn't harm me in any way.
It's why I've nudged both my sons to have a job besides school: just so they know where the money comes from they want me to spend on them.

Congrats to the new job Bel.
But you should calculate well what is better for you in the end - two Mini or one parttime job, and if parttime + mini really will pay in the end, don't forget the tax - especially when having to put your and your husbands salary together for the yearly income tax thing you certainly have to fill in....

I have one part time job, and it's much better paid than the mini job.
Sadly, more than half of it ids taken away for taxes, insurances etc.
On the other hand, I have paid holidays, 13 salaries/year, and still get my money if I'm ill. I wouldn't want to be with two mini jobs, to be honest.

I am surprised to see that the word 'tax' gets past the automatic yiking mechanism. The word makes me shudder. The last time I received a letter from the Inland Revenue in the UK, I sold my house and haven't owned one there since!

My feet are on fire, my legs are aching, but it went remarkably well.
I think for a first day in a completely new environment I didn't do too bad.
However, the few mistakes I made (mainly by hitting the wrong keys on the cash register) I had custumers who were very impatient.
Still, time passed quickly, especially since I had forgotten to take my watch this morning and had no idea how late it was all afternoon, so I couldn't check the watch and think : so and so many hours still to go.
Key: Complain about this post
