Have children and busy times at home (doing nothing much strangely?) and a little cat back from the vets, being neutered (what's the correct word for female cats?). She was quite wobbly and sad to start with, now she is mostly annoyed at the cone around her neck. It's to prevent her from licking the stitches, but mostly it makes her bang into furniture, being bigger than she...

Aww, your poor pussy; collared!

I *think* the correct term for females is "spayed", males are "castrated" (sorry lads)...but "neutered" can apply to both. Or here they just ask "has she had the op?"

Yoda "had the op" & was a total pain for trying to rip the stitches out, had to go back several times & she ended up being collared too.

In Kuwait, it's (ludicrous; i know!smiley - rolleyes) illegal to neuter animals "interfering with nature"; so you had to make a furtive phone call to a sensible vet, "i think my cat needs seeing to" & then he arrives, & does the job on the kitchen table. I had two Siamese, boy & girl. He asked me to prepare in advance boiled sterile sheets, i did so, they were candy striped, pink & blue, i assumed they were for surgical drape stuff but no.

After the job was done, he neatly stitched them into little candy striped body suits. Pussy cats resembled pretty sausage rolls, but they couldn't get at the stitches! They were most indignant.smiley - rofl

I am not very good at the etch sketch and even worse at paint brush. I do not have any pets even though I would love to. I have heard a few stories of local cats either being poisoned or shot which has put me off and I am bit of a worrier. If I had a dog, I would worry that I the dog would get into a fight or get attacked by other dogs during walkees. I would love to work with animals and I am thinking of working in animal shelters either for cats or dogs or both as I just love animals. There is a local cat and when I go near her she always comes to me and loves being stroked.

Congratulations on the new job.smiley - bubblysmiley - bubbly

Thinker: i reckon working at an animal shelter would maybe be great, you get to help the animals, contact with them *but* don't have to fret about providing a permanent home.

I'mnot criticizing anyone so I hope I don't sound that way, but I'm always curious as to why people are afraid to get pets for fear of them being shot or poisoned? Surely no one wants to break into your home just to poison or shoot your pet? Or were you thinking if you had a dog, you'd leave pup out in the yard while you're at work and someone might hurt him then- in which case a doggie door might be a huge help! smiley - winkeye

Hi psychocandysmiley - smiley I read in the local newspaper that cats have been poisoned and I think it is when cats are let out and neighbours have probably put out poison. People have taken their dogs have a walk and other dogs have attacked them and it is not stray dogs but owners not controlling their dogs. There have been quite a lot of stories where people have been on walks and owners do not keep their dogs on leads and they let them attack other dogs and sometimes even encourage it. It is not a very nice area. Also there have been local reports of cats when they have been let out in the garden being shot.

Terri, there is a cat charity shop where I live and I will ask them there. Hopefully the shelter will be local and easy to get to by public transport. I will look in the Thurrock gazette our local paper to see if there is any information about animal shelters as they have adverts for to adopt dogs or cats.

I see what you mean... I'm unaccustomed to the idea of people letting their cats outside. It's because I live in a city. Thanks for explaining.

Maybe someday you can have an indoor cat. Our cat stays indoors all the time and he's as happy as a clam. smiley - smiley

Working at a shelter would be a great idea, I think. I have had friends who picked up part-time work as dog-walkers, vet assistants, or giving baths at groomers. Might any of those be feasible options for you?

Hi psychocandy

I am think of getting a cat but not where I will do live. I think another reason is that I do not like the area and I have lived here for nearly four years and I have never felt settled. It is the first place that I have lived that has such a negative atmosphere.

I would like to do the day to day care of dogs or a vet assistant but vet assistant vacancies are very hard to find. I have looked for vacancies locally but there none. There once was vacancy for work at a stable but I would have to have needed to have my own transport to get there.

*sigh* Transport issues, back to that, an issue very dear to my heart. If you don't have a car, these days you seem to be stuffed, if you have any sort of handicap which makes walking/cycling difficult; you are doubly stuffed.

It's becoming patently obvious that the planet can't continue with this system, even if we change to bio-fuels (misnomer if ever i heard one!) it Won't Work. Growing wheat to make into oil in 3rd World countries, who can barely feed themselves in a year without drought??? Get off!

The only answer is cheap public transport which is reliable, safe & 24/24 (some folks work shifts) & as envirionmentally compatible & accessible as possible. Hence Les Verts (now allied with les radiceuax) are pushing like crazy for a tramway system here, Angoulême is like San Fransisco, the main stuff on top of a large steep hill, the amenities down below; trams make a lot of sense.

Tomorrow i am going to the first Public meeting of the alliance, the voting is on Sunday, all over France it seems to be the same, the leftie Greens are out of the closet & saying "hell, if the planet dies (which it will); it doesn't really matter which party you voted for, but politics means people & if enough of us say 'Enough!'; there's a faint chance that the process of consumerist destruction may at least get slowed & people start to think."

Yeah, i'm on a soapbox right now but it's a soapbox that's screaming, begging, pleading for the smiley - earth to continue for a while longer, while we all try & sort out ways of handing a fair deal to all life forms. Humans got lumbered with the CEO job & we're gonna be sacked by the Universe at this rate.

*political rant over*

Otherwise; today here has been sorta...neighbourly. Sharing resources stuff, smiley - roflsmiley - cross & everything in between, including family deathssmiley - rose...but the storms seem to have passed & the daffodils are starting to come out...Spring is in the air!smiley - boing
