To top everything off, I am now in the throws of losing my job. they're making our department from 5 1/2 people to 2 1/2 people. I am last in, so will be first out.

Sometimes you have to reach rock bottom before you can start climbing back up again. Much the same thing happened to my daughter #2, she got her dream job in Harrogate then the foot & mouth crisis hit and she was turfed out, last in, first out. A couple of years down the line she's passed her exams, landed a better job, moved to a city she loves, got married by Elvis in Vegas, moved on, getting divorced, going on holiday to Spain next week 
makes me tired out just reading that back, glad I'm no longer 28.
