Water up to the second floor (A dream)

I dreamed that a violent rainstorm came to my area. The river started overflowing its banks. Soon Dedham square was under water, and I was worried that library (which is just a block away) would be inundated, too. I checked with the people on the second and third floors of the building, asking if they would let me take refuge there if the water started rising into the first floor.

SAuddenly I realized, with alarm, that I had important papers and valuables stored at a bank in the square. I rushed down to the bank, asking to see my stuff, and they assured me that they had copies of it in a safe place, but when I pressed them to let me actually see it, they had to admit that my valuables were in an underground area, which was flooded. smiley - yuk

By now, water was lapping at the end of the street where the library was. I wondered if Jake Gyllenhaal, who was in town to film a movie, was going to be safe (I had seen him ride his bicycle earlier that day, and he had smiled when he saw me.

It was time to stop worrying, though. The rain stopped, the sun came out, and the water began draining away. The flood had never come into the library, though it was a couple inches deep on the back lawn.

Re-opening the old inn (a dream)

I dreamed that I was responsible for re-opening an old inn that had been unused for awhile (maybe it was closed in the Winter, and the dream took place in Spring).

I probably wasn't assigned to the guest rooms or laundry or whatever, but I had a team of maybe 6 or 7 people in the kitchen, which was pretty big. Maybe there was a sizable group of people in the dining room, because we had to go all out, making pancakes and eggs, and even some burgers and steaks.

I had to intervene sometimes, as my inexperienced helpers would get too close to a burner and almost set the place on fire. smiley - yikes
The hustle and bustle of people in motion was making vibrations in the room, and this was knocking little bits of flakes from the cereal dispensers above our heads. It seemed wasteful, not to mention messy (who would sweep it up, so nobody slipped on the debris?), but we would have to attend to it later, after the diners had finished eating.

Eating pizza and donuts in church (a dream)

Many's the dream I've had about the picturesque white chutch with a tall steeple that I used to attend when I was growing up. It had an elegant simplicity, and its location on a hill made it stand out.

So imagine my shock as I dreamed about returning to it for a service after all these years: a third of the pews at the back had been removed. The organ was gone, too. Poor turnout? Nobody cared about having music in the service?

There was no particularly cogent message in the sermon, but they really wanted to keep people coming back, so right after the collection, all kinds of goodies were handed around to the congregation: pizza, donuts, cookies. I don't remember fried chicken, but maybe they brought that out every *other* Sunday. smiley - winkeye

The reasons why you cannot turn paper plates into shoes (a dream)

I dreamed that someone had started a trend toward putting strips of plastic around the edges and center of paper plates, and strapping them to your feet to be used as shoes.

The biggest advantage would be that you could slide on the plates, allowing you to move so quickly (except on stairs, where you could break your neck smiley - yikes ) that you wouldn't even need a car or bus to get around smiley - cool.

In my dream, I covered 30 miles on the paper plate shoes, but it was very strange. Several times, the shoes came off and I had to reassemble them. smiley - sadface

Backwards and in high heels

Okay, this is a bit of useless trivia, but today seems like a good day for dwelling on trivia. A while back, someone observed that Ginger Rogers danced the same steps as Fred Astaire, but she did it backwards and in high heels. I always smile when I think about that, because Ginger was topnotch all the way. She showed a lot of spunk in those old Astaire-Rogers movies. True, there were also some silly twits in those movies, people like Edward Everett Horton and Eric Blore, but Fred and Ginger anchored the plots with some poignant moments and a lot of glorious, elegant dancing. The best songwriters of the time (Jerome Kern, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, though never Richard Rodgers) wrote music for the soundracks, while Fred and Ginger gave very polished vocal interpretations that have stood up very well over the years. When I hear recordings of Sinatra, I always feel I can detect Fred Astaire's influence in his diction and phrasing. Fred didn't have the world's best voice (especially in his later years), but he put what he had to magnificent use. Only Angela Lansbury has gotten as much mileage out of an average voice.

Anyway, although I've never dreamed about being Ginger Rogers, it would not be a bad dream. Ginger showed that she had the chops for dramatic acting in "Kitty Foyle," and she showed her true colors in romantic comedy in "Carefree." In leter life, Ginger trod the boards (as thespians say) in all the standard musical plays ("Hellp Dolly" at the head of the list). I don't think she had much of a film career after, say, 1960 (I'm too lazy to look this up...) . She was still doing work on the stage till pretty late in her game. More power to her!
