I was a mere boy when I had roast pigeon the first time. Three, if memory serves. And the gravy didn't taste anything like pidgeon poo - although, how would I know smiley - huh

My grandma likes to tell stories of soup made of craw meat. Her fater was a hunter and they hunted craws in the field with an owl.

Tav, is 'craw' a largest black bird? If so it is crow in English. Some people render its call as caaaw.

Sorry, that was a spelling mistake, yes, a crow. Krähe in German.

Wow, that's interesting, Tav, that people eat crows. smiley - bigeyes

There's an old children's rhyme in English that goes, 'four and twenty blackbirds, baked into a pie'.

But also in English, 'to eat crow' means to be forced to apologise because you misunderstood something. Like, 'when the defendant was found innocent, the police and prosecution hat to eat crow.' smiley - laugh

I am not sure that crows would be good eating---if they have been chowng down on grain it would be OK, but crows also are scavengers who eat dead things as well. That wouldn't be too tasty. But it would be more like eating the locusts which become a plague in the Middle East.

Aparently a single grasshopper just eats grass but under certain condtions they develop stronger wings and swarm in huge numbers eating every plant they come across.

Don't talk to me about grasshoppers. Shudder. To me, the grasshopper always lies heavy...smiley - run

It was common to eat crows in Denmark in the olden days. Usually very young birds, mind (unless you were on thr brink of starvation, of course). And rooks, thrushes and starlings too by the way

The black crow, rook (?), not the raven, is still considered a special delicacy here. You are supposed to take them young. I tried once, it's not bad. More flavour than chicken, and a little drier meat. Good stuff.

Aha! Amy, you have restored my faith in scriptwriters. smiley - biggrin

Now, that a British travel writer could have been responsible for a 'What's Up, Tiger Lily?' version of a propaganda video is totally believable.

Once again, tahnks to you for finding this and setting us straight - and thanks as always to the redoubtable Mikkelson team for keeping the internet from scrambling our brains. smiley - rofl
