Hie thee to a pubbery
Lyns Posted Dec 8, 2000
As a new h2g2er (or should that be newbie?), I'm still trying to get the hand of these smileys. Pubs, a different matter!
I've got bad timing though - just as everyone is coming up to Scotland for Hogmanay, I'm heading down South (there'd be an unhappy smiley here if I could work out how to do it). I'm back around the 3rd/4th though -would that be any good for anyone?

I'll be here for the duration of the holidays and beyond (no more vacatioon this year).
I could definitely go for a Glasgow meet-up/research-topi- discussion-gathering-group.

So, 4th or 5th then, or even 6th (although I am supposed to be at a birthday do in Wokingham (thats Surrey folks) that night!)?

Nice hat Munchie! 4th/5th-ish then is it? I can do that, I understand DD & FC might be around at that time too.
Oh, by the way Lyns, if you have a look at http://www.h2g2.com/Smiley you can teach yourself how to do all the smilies.

ha ha - got it at last! Bear with me for the next few postings (I'm sure the novelty will wear off eventually!)
Oh - and any of those dates sound good to me! (I like the hat too!)

Meet up over christmas sounds like a great idea but I'm pretty much booked up this year and I have to start back at work on the 3rd. Poot.
Still, discuss dates amongst yourselves and I'll see if I can make it through (maybe just for the afternoon). It's entirely unlike me to pass up the excuse to head pub-wards.

Anyone for the 6th? Just realised it's a Saturday wich makes my presence a far more likely prospect.

Hi gang, just checking in.
Lyns and I work in the same office, so I've already had an RL chat with her. I'll do my best to get to any meeting, though my suggestion is that at this time of year getting everyone together may be tough, and perhaps one or two smaller groups might be best initially?
Although as an Edinburgh boy, you might expect me to say the best thing about Glasgow is the M8 eastwards....

We're still not sure we have an invite or two down south in the new year before heading our seperate ways again. We will see what we can do though, keep us posted.

So Saturday 6th in Glasgow then (and maybe a few smaller get-togethers before that too!) I have a feeling it's gonna be a very boozy few months... oh well - has to be done!
Where's a good place to meet in Glasgow?

Munchkin Posted Dec 11, 2000
Well, if you are making a day of it, probably a station (Central most likely) followed by some public building spotting maybe and then to a pub. If we just want to do the pub thing, and who wouldn't I can name a number of pubs, both in the centre and in the West End, which was more my haunts anyway.
So the questions is, are we just meeting to have a natter, or are we going to do something else first? And do we want to stay in the centre or Go West Young Man?
Ha Bumhug!
Lyns Posted Dec 11, 2000
I guess it would be good to have a natter first, coffee - even late breakfast maybe?... I can fill you all in on the details about this! Then we could do some touring and just see how it goes... ending up in a suitable pub. It would be great to feature the West End in the guide, because it's a bit more off the beaten track... maybe Uisge Beathe and Lord Kelvin could feature in there somehow? And we could get there on the Clockwork Orange!

Lost in Scotland Posted Dec 11, 2000
I'm there. If it's a Saturday, I will have no problem to get there, and probably no excuses, more than oversleeping. Or undersleeping, as I did for the Edinburgh meet-up.
Anyways, I'm still no good to find many decent pubs in Glasgow, so I'll leave that up to you, guys (although, there is a quite nice pub just at the Queen Street Station, maybe a good meet-up point for people coming from Edinburgh by the express train).
Ha Bumhug!
SPINY (aka Ship's Cook) Posted Dec 11, 2000
What express train would that be, Lost ? Have you travelled by Scotrail of late? And I do mean late!
Anyway, yes, I'll do my best for that date. Perhaps I'll drive though.

Cripes! I go away for a few days, and come back to find it's all organised. The worst bit is I have no idea if I can make the 6th or not.
Oh well.

Munchkin Posted Dec 11, 2000
I think the 6th is the best of both worlds, close to Ne'er Day for those around on their holidays and not too close for those away on their hols, if you know what I mean. Being earlier interferes with any poor sap who has to go back to work early. Later and I, at least, am five hundred odd mile away. C'est la vie as they say not far from here.
May I suggest a city centre pub (hereafter named The Counting House) as the initial meeting place, with arrangements made to collect anyone who is lost and confused in one of Railtracks fine establishments? We could have lunch there, a light natter as to things we want to do and then an afternoon of playing on the Underground, gawping at Europe's thinnest spire (I think, have to check that one) and discussing which way round Kelvingrove Art Galleries should be and then retire to a further pub (hereafter referred to as the Uisghe Beatha, or Ishkies) where those who can't make the whole day (or indeed don't want to) can meet us.

Lyns Posted Dec 11, 2000
Hi Babel-17 - do hope that you'll be able to make it on the 6th
If not, Spiny talked about getting together in smaller groups, maybe in Edinburgh(?) beforehand - so that's another possibility. Or maybe both!
