Broe, I *just* heard that you had your baby! Congrats!
(we need a baby bootie smiley)
(meanwhile, that'll have to do)

Thanks! Getting back into my old routine (or more specifically, creating a new one) has been rough going these first few weeks. I'm slowly coming to grips with the realization that, schedule-wise anyway, the next year is just going to suck.
Who needs sleep anyway, right?
SuperChunk is doing great! He's sleeping through the night already, and adapting to me being away beautifully. He's an angel for his grandma and daddy, doesn't cry much, takes his bottles just fine, and doesn't even fuss when they run out of milk and have to resort to formula.
When I get home at night all I want to do is hold him because I miss him so much during the day. But I'm gone for 15 hours and by the time I get home it's nearly his bedtime .
It's hard to remember my oldest being this little. He's being such a great big brother that I just want to hug him a lot, too, but he's at that age (10) where moms are best kept at arms' length - if you let them get closer they may think about kissing you.

You put in a 15 hour day?! That's *horrible*!
I realize that probably includes driving time, but still... I don't know how you're doing it, I really don't. I didn't work after my kids were born, and I still had a rough time of it, because babies are just a *lot* of work, plain and simple. I'm of the firm belief that Mom should sleep *any* time that baby is sleeping, no matter what time of day or night it is, just to get enough sleep.
Of course the fact that my first one seemed to have a case of colic that lasted about 3 years didn't help any... She'll be 23 in a few days.
Glad SuperChunk's adjusted to the changes so quickly though - and that he's sleeping through the night already!

Yes, that includes drive time, but I still work a 13 hour shift. The trade off is that I (usually) get 4 days off every week. I briefly considered switching to a more traditional schedule, but I'd still have to work 10 hours a day, it would cost more in childcare, more in gas (which is a big consideration these days - right now it costs me between $8 and $8.50 a day to get back and forth to work), and I would lose a considerable ammount of money in differentials I would no longer qualify for.
The days that I have to work are hell, but knowing I don't have to cram all of my quality time into two little days that also have to accomodate housework and any social activities I can muster the energy to attend make it worthwhile. Plus the days that I work he gets to spend more one-on-one time with grandma and daddy that he wouldn't otherwise get.

it is a well-known fact that women hardly need any sleep at all the first few years after giving birth. take it from an expert. i have had three kids of my own for years (in fact my oldest is 23 today) so i know what i'm talking about
nah, of course i didn't really mean that!!! parents (mothers in particular) need all the sleep and rest they can get, which is very seldom enough
and i think it's terrible that you have to spent so much time away from you kids, broelan

It's so great to hear about your baby and changes to your life.
I would greatly advise sticking to the 4 days off schedule, I'm away 10 hours each day and you're right it's just- dinner, clean-up, bath and bedtime - all in an hour and a half.
Four days off EVERY week would be a joy.
As must be that little guy of yours (Super Chunk??! is that with nuts?)
Good to see your posts again.

He's living up to it. 7 months old now and nearly 20 pounds!
I'm still missing everyone terribly. I hope to have more online time after the new year, but that's just a guess. As I'm doing things offline I keep thinking 'I should write about that for h2g2' or 'That would make a great entry' or 'THis would be a good Post article'...
I want to come baaaaack!
Merry Christmas everybody. Thanks for thinking of me even when I'm not here. It really means a lot.
Love you all! all around (yes, even you, elwood)
